8 Things to Do in Montrose, Houston
Samantha Reimers
October 1, 2025Montrose is often considered one of Houston’s most eccentric and walkable neighborhoods. The district, situated just north of downtown, is a sanctuary for misfits and artists that’s been preserved through over 100 years of urban development and renovation.
With experiences ranging from afternoon teas to browsing eclectic antiques, there is always something to do in this city within a city. We have compiled a list of some of the best places to check out in Montrose, both day and night.
Montrose was established in 1911 and, throughout the years, has come to be known as the fountainhead for Houston’s LGBTQ+ community and a staple in Houston’s fashion and art scenes.
While it has changed over the years, the neighborhood at its core is still the same. With its rich history and diverse institutions, Montrose is a melting pot of culture. It’s considered “the heart of Houston” and as regular visitors, we couldn’t agree more.
This guide will take you through some of the best places to eat, drink, shop, and visit when you’re in the neighborhood – from famed institutions like Hugo’s and The Menil Collection to newer spots like The Marigold Club and Montrose Collective.
We got you covered on the best Montrose has to offer.
8 Things to Do in Montrose, Houston
This is a younger cocktail bar and restaurant that has skyrocketed in popularity since it opened in 2019. It was featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, with stellar reviews that we couldn’t agree with more.
Its jungle theme and vintage music takes you right to the tropics, where you can enjoy Caribbean and Southeast Asian inspired cuisine as well as American favorites.
The Toasted Coconut boasts a killer menu that features classic and tropical dishes with a twist. The cocktails are colorful and unique – perfect for H-Town’s own tiki hut. Favorites on the food side include their “world famous” cheeseburger and pork dumplings.
On the drink side, you have to go with their namesake, The Toasted Coconut, a cocktail that is just as salty as it is sweet. They serve both classic Tiki drinks and new concoctions just as good as the originals.
If you decide to make the at-home tropical vacation, make sure to get a reservation beforehand – spots go quick, and you don’t want to miss out!

We’d been wanting to check out The Toasted Coconut for a while since we heard they have great food and cocktails. Finally made it, and it was totally worth it. For cocktails, we tried their Vamos a la Playa, which is a smoky mezcal drink, and Tropic Like It’s Hot, a spicy tequila one. Both were super refreshing and really well made. For food, we went with small plates. The dumplings were the highlight full of flavor and just really good. The crispy eggplants were great too, crunchy and tasty. The lamb flatbread didn’t really work for us. It was too crispy and oily, and I couldn’t taste much of the lamb. The place has a really nice vibe, very relaxed and fun. Our server was super friendly and gave great recommendations. They told us to come back for the burgers, so we’ll definitely be back to try those.

Niko Niko’s is a classic and one that has grown into a franchise of three locations spanning across the Houston area. Montrose is to thank for this iconic Greek and American cafe, hosting the original since 1977.
Niko Niko’s was started by Greek immigrants Chrisanthios and Eleni Fetokakis, whose pipe dream of “selling euros to cowboys” became reality through years of hard work and dedication.
The restaurant is currently being run by their son, Dimitri, who is as dedicated as his parents to serving up dishes seemingly unbefitting to your barbecue-loving Texan.
Niko Niko’s is the best place for Greek in Houston – full stop. It’s also one of the only places you can get loukoumades in the area. And you definitely should get the loukoumades – they are Greek honey balls that you can add gelato to for a tasty dessert.
The gyros and Greek salad are to die for – but the menu is big enough that anyone can find something they like. Don’t worry – it’s all good.

We had the Hercules plate, gyro sandwich side greek salad, and hummus with pita bread....all was great, the lemon potatoes with any meal are a must try. Also we were so full that we didn't get to try the sweets even though I really wanted to. Added bonus they have the sonic ice iykyk. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Houston.

The Marigold Club is the newest establishment from Goodnight Hospitality – the team behind restaurants such as March and Rosie Cannonball.
The restaurant serves fresh cuisine in a posh Mayfair London-inspired setting as elegant as it is bright. They have three levels of caviar service, an extensive raw bar, and sundae carts that roam the restaurant floors for a tableside extravaganza. What more could one want?
The menu changes regularly, but it currently includes items such as Mussel Escabeche Toast and Duke Wellington for dinner and King Crab Tart and Chicken Milanese for brunch.
The Marigold Club also hosts an afternoon tea – the perfect break to a day of shopping and enjoying all the beauty Montrose has to offer. On the drinks side, a heavy emphasis is placed on French winemakers and Champagne.
The Marigold Club is where the opulence of London meets the eccentricity of Montrose – brought together by expertly-crafted French dishes and a vision executed to its highest potential.

We had the most wonderful dinner at Marigold Club on Friday night. Everything we ordered was spot-on ~ the oysters, ranch crackers, shrimp cocktail, Duck Wellington, and Fish “Not” Chips were all absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is so charming and transformative we honestly forgot we were in Houston. It’s the perfect spot for a special occasion, but also a fantastic way to elevate an ordinary weeknight. Complements to the pastry chef - the desserts were finale to an already outstanding meal. Highly recommend!

Hugo’s is known for its authentic Mexican cooking and earthy flavors. In a city chock-full of Tex-Mex, owner Hugo Ortega gets fresh and innovative with the classics while staying true to his native cuisine.
All tortillas, moles, cheeses, and chocolate are made from scratch using traditional Mexican techniques. These handmade items are used to create exemplary dishes like the Taquito de Langosta and Lechón.
The interior of the restaurant is as fresh as its ingredients, with elements of both contemporary architecture and old Mexico used to create an unforgettable environment.
Hugo’s is the perfect place to go for those who enjoy Mexican food and Mexican decoration.
The corn tortillas are handmade, the wine program is award-winning, and the tequila menu is stellar – what more could you ask for? Hugo’s is considered to be one of the best places to eat in all of Houston – and that’s not an exaggeration.
We promise you won’t regret your visit to this well-known eatery.

I came to Houston for a quick overnight visit and googled best restaurants near me and found Hugos. I was blown away. The food was incredible, the tequila high quality and diverse and the service smart and professional. I had the ceviche which was bright, fresh, and tasty. Nextvi had the Lechon, the suckling pig, which was tender, juicy and just a bit spicy. Next I had the duck, which quite literally melted in my mouth. The mole cornbread, greens and sweet potato puree were the perfect accompaniment to a crispy dilute with a ln amazing mole sauce. Add all this to the four great tequilas and I don't think I could have had a better meal. A+++ recommended.

Every Sunday, Montrose Restaurant and Bar Boheme hosts their coveted Drag Brunch.
Watch some of Houston’s best Drag Queens bring the stage to life with fun and fresh performances that will wake you up faster than one of their espresso shots.
This is a great option for celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. After all, nothing pairs better with French toast than a live performance.
Two shows take place every Sunday: one from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm and another from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm.
In order to attend, you must purchase the $39 cover fee on Boheme’s website. The cover fee includes access to the show and the brunch buffet. Make sure to keep the kids at home if you plan to attend- this weekly event is 21+!
We love brunch and we love drag shows. Boheme’s offers both at the same time, with mimosas. We would be hard-pressed to find a better way to spend our Sunday morning.

This is a cute and cozy spot that offers interesting menu items. The owner is really sweet and personable. I enjoyed lunch here during the week and had a great time. I had the Boheme truffle burger and fries and a strawberry smash mocktail. Everything was tasty and made fresh. I would highly recommend stopping by.

Cactus Music is Houston’s historic independent record store with a selection of records, tapes, and CDs that you won’t see anywhere else.
The shop is over 40 years old and has served as a second space to residents of Montrose. People congregate at Cactus Music to listen to live shows and meet other music-loving people.
The store’s selection includes almost every physical format of music available, as well as historic memorabilia and music-themed gifts. Their music spans every genre, and they even have a movie section that sells old DVDs and Blu Ray.
One of the great things about Cactus Music is that they host multiple listening events and release parties throughout the year.
They also have in-store performances – meaning you can browse the music and listen to it all at the same time. There is no better place to shop if you’re a vinyl-head, Spotify aficionado, or enjoyer of a classic beat.

This “creative canvas” is a mixed-use destination perfect for your upscale, boutique shopping devotee.
The Montrose Collective hosts a variety of great restaurants, bars, cafes, workout studios, and salons within its lush walls, but it’s the shopping that shines through those lush walls and makes this a place worth visiting.
Visitors can shop at retailers like PAIGE, Mejuri, Reformation, and GANNI, all in one development in the heart of Houston’s most colorful neighborhood.
The Montrose Collective has many eco-friendly businesses between their lush balconies. The development was created to embrace the energy and inclusiveness of Montrose.
It’s modern but earthy – the perfect destination for a high-end shopping experience that stays true to Montrose’s soul.
Recently, the building became home to The Real Real’s first brick and mortar location in Houston and a new candle making workshop called Paddywax Candle Bar.
There are so many different shops to choose from at the Montrose Collection – so make sure you stop by!

I visited once and I was highly impressed. I would love to go back for regular shopping. I Just had a dessert at the ice cream shop. There is a parking garage which takes payment, so plenty of space to park. There is also street parking and valet. It was very busy on a Sunday. We stopped by the candle shop. You can buy or make your own. I saw a couple of restaurants, ice cream shop, coffee shop, clothing shops and many others upstairs. It was a quick visit but I highly recommend exploring this mall.

This small shop offers a little something for everyone – over 200 independent brands are featured with goods ranging from jewelry to art to small trinkets you won’t find anywhere else in Houston.
Space Montrose is the conception of the Perez family. They opened their store in 2010 and still maintain ownership over the spot despite its growth in popularity.
The family wanted to create a store that celebrated small business and inspired creativity – and create a store they did.
Space Montrose is a place that highlights and sells products from artists and creators who live and craft in the USA.
New brands find their voices here, where shoppers can peruse through handcrafted goods and items just as unique as the store itself. They offer custom gift boxes – perfect for occasions ranging from baby showers to birthdays.
They are always highlighting new talent, so we like to stop by as frequently as possible to see what new items Space Montrose has to offer!

Conclusion
Montrose is one of the most unique and iconic neighborhoods in Houston. No matter how many times we go – we always end up finding new things to do, new places to eat and new stores to drain our wallets clean empty.
Its painted streets and abstract murals allure us and highlight the culturally rich history of the roads we drive and sidewalks we walk.
No matter who many times you visit – there is always something new to try out or niche and cranny to explore. Ask any resident and they will tell you – Montrose is special. It’s not somewhere you want to miss.
However you decide to spend your time in Montrose, make sure to have fun. This is one of Houston’s most interesting and culturally-rich areas with hundreds of places to choose from for shopping, drinking, or eating.
We’ve put some of our favorites together here that we think you can’t miss out on, so hurry on over to The Marigold Club for brunch, grab some vintage clothes on Westheimer and drink the night away at The Toasted Coconut.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a music lover ready to buy a few new records or a class-act looking for an afternoon tea – Montrose has what you need.
