Sixth Street is Loud – These Speakeasies in Austin Aren’t
Marina Garfield
October 14, 2026In a world of influencers, viral TikTok finds, and algorithm-approved hot spots, who hasn’t dreamed of being whisked away to a quiet, undisturbed location? Enter the speakeasy: hidden bars that date back to America’s Prohibition era. Under strict anti-alcohol laws, bar owners surreptitiously opened password-protected underground spots where a city’s nightlife flourished. Today, nearly a century after the 21st Amendment was ratified and Prohibition ended, speakeasies continue to operate across the United States, offering patrons a one-of-a-kind cocktail experience. And in Austin, these speakeasies may be closer than you think.
For tourists and locals alike, Sixth Street is famous for its bright lights, bustling atmosphere, and bacchanalian nightlife. Between rowdy college students stumbling through “Dirty Sixth” (Congress Avenue to I-35) and the mature, upscale bars on West Sixth, you are sure to find a perfect place to celebrate your night out. But tucked among Austin favorites, you can locate secret, exclusive speakeasies perfect for elevating your evening.
From reservation-only locations to bars concealed behind unassuming bookcases to a suspiciously outdated Floppy Disk Repair Co., these ten speakeasies keep Austin weird, one craft cocktail at a time. So, the next time you are looking for a date spot, a girls’ night out, or a cool, new haunt, try visiting one of these hidden gems. That is, if you can find them ;)
10 Best Speakeasies in Austin
Nestled between a for-lease office space and a sprawling mural lies one of Austin nightlife’s best-hidden gems. This secret bar’s Texas-inspired menu highlights cocktails and bites including Original Outlaw, Tex-Mex, and March of the Butterflies. During December, enjoy exclusive drinks from Here Nor There’s holiday menu such as the Tiramiso, a clever spin on an espresso martini featuring coffee from Austin’s own Desnudo, or the Merry Matcha, a Mizu lemongrass shochu mixed with Desnudo’s uji matcha. Bear in mind (a small pun for seasoned visitors, who are familiar with the ten-foot-tall taxidermied bear greeting patrons with a free glass of sparkling wine upon arrival) that Here Nor There only seats 55 people, and groups of 6+ will need to make a separate reservation. But all good things must come to an end; Here Nor There limits each reservation to 90 minutes.

This place is such a hidden gem! You could literally walk right past it and never know it’s there. If you’re looking for a unique date night spot I highly recommend checking it out. The atmosphere is intimate with a laid back vibe the music is great and the drinks are absolutely amazing. Every cocktail we tried was delicious. It’s not a huge place but it’s the perfect size and never felt overcrowded. This definitely isn’t a place I’d bring kids or teenagers and I don’t believe they’re allowed anyway. Reservations are required so be sure to plan ahead. Overall this is one of those places you’ll be glad you found. I would absolutely go back!

If you’re a history buff, crime aficionado, or are simply wanting to experience one of Austin’s oldest speakeasies, then Midnight Cowboy is the place for you. With the building dating to the late 1800s, this bar is the definition of an Austin staple. In 1970, the building housed the Midnight Cowboy Modeling Oriental Massage, a brothel posing as a massage parlor. Following an FBI raid in 2011, the brothel shut down and the space was converted into a speakeasy. Today, Midnight Cowboy still sports its original Midnight Cowboy Modeling Oriental Massage sign, paying homage to the building’s history and one of Austin’s most infamous tales.
Thanks to its rotating menu, no two visits to Midnight Cowboy are identical. But this bar’s limited seating (46-48 people at a time) and popularity makes reservations a must, especially on weekends. In July 2026, the speakeasy unveiled its most recent menu: Midnight Hour. This collection features a series of time-inspired drinks, including New Beginnings and Summer Abroad, that remind guests to not let the little moments slip by unnoticed.

rom the outside, Midnight Cowboy looks like any other Austin apartment building — intercom panel, buzzers, residents listed by name. If you're looking for the best vibe in Austin, you almost walked right past it. *Note: "The residents are the key." That's all I'll say. THE VIBE: The aesthetic is pure mood—leather booths, exposed brick, and dark wood floors. It’s the kind of place where the mirrors have ornate wood trim and the lighting is kept low enough to make the rest of the world disappear. It’s intimate, quiet, and feels like a true sanctuary - endless and strangely timeless. THE DRINKS: The cocktail menu — called the Arcana — is framed like a tarot deck, and the drinks live up to the concept. The Blood Moon was the standout of the night: full-bodied, smoky, and somehow also delightfully fruity — the kind of cocktail you don't expect to work as well as it does. The Ostara was its perfect counterpart. These aren't just cocktails. The use of bitters and herbals here demonstrates a level of mixology that genuinely elevates the experience. THE EXTRA: We ended the night with a tarot reading by a dedicated reader in one of the private rooms at the back. It wasn't planned — it just happened. Organic, ethereal, and exactly the kind of moment this place seems designed to create. OVERALL: Condé Nast Traveler named it one of the best bars in Austin, and they're not wrong. A solid 5/5. Whether you come for the cocktails, the atmosphere, or whatever unexpected thing happens at the back of the bar — Midnight Cowboy delivers. Make a reservation, especially on weekends. And brush up on your tarot

The next time you are circling Downtown Austin, searching for a parking spot, keep an eye out for Small Victory, a quaint speakeasy hidden on the second floor of an East 7th Street garage. Concealed behind a glass door with a tiny red “V,” Small Victory is a pocket-sized escape, glowing in dark amber hues. At 800 square feet, the bar curates an intimate setting, seating a maximum of 40 people, though no reservations are required. Despite its tight space, Small Victory has masterfully decorated the nook to create a classy, upscale bar. The speakeasy features a full bar filled with unique spirits and homemade syrups, plush chairs, and blue velvet booths for patrons to lounge on while sipping their signature drinks. From bitter and aromatic cocktails to bubbling, absinthe-based concoctions, locating this gem will be anything but a small victory.

This place is a bar nerd's dream, and the bartenders themselves are totally here for it. When Cara and Holly realized that half our group are bartenders (we were asking about the ice and complimenting how clear it is -- it's really mind-blowing, honestly), they showed us the "ice room" right away. Their ice is made in-house! So impressive, but not as much as their warm hospitality and spectacular cocktails. Thank you, ladies!!!

If you are banking on finding a cool spot to impress your date or celebrate a night out, look no further than The Treasury, a bank-themed speakeasy giving a new meaning to the phrase “liquid assets.” With no website, The Treasury has a very limited online presence, making it the definition of a locals-only haunt. To locate this bar, follow a green light dangling in Shangri-La’s backyard to a vault-like door. Press the intercom, and, depending on the venue’s capacity, you may be buzzed in. If these instructions are complicated, don’t worry—the bar posted a video on its Instagram showing patrons how to get there. True to its theme, the menu at The Treasury is organized into finance-inspired sections. From the ATM (fast-poured cocktails) to the offshore accounts (twists on familiar favorites) to the home investments (signature drinks), this speakeasy is sure to give you a bang for your buck.

Given the price of real estate these days, you may wonder how a floppy disk repair company can afford rent in one of Austin’s busiest neighborhoods. Perhaps a recent nostalgia for a 90s aesthetic has caused a resurgence in business… or maybe this building is keeping a much more interesting secret. Masquerading as a technology repair company, Red Headed Stepchild (the name of the horror movie-inspired bar inside) is literally hiding in plain sight. Once inside, enjoy its iconic aesthetic, swingset chairs, and expertly mixed cocktails. The bar is the epitome of a classic speakeasy, featuring an unassuming entrance, a secret code, and a members-only messaging list. To receive the code—which changes monthly—guests are encouraged to visit neighboring bars, buy a drink, and ask a friendly bartender for their help. Alternatively, you could spend time noodling around the Floppy Disk Repair Co. website to learn where to enroll as a member and get the code texted to you directly. We won’t spoil the fun of sleuthing for your membership, but if you need a hint, you can start here.

Best place in Austin!! My friends n I stumbled upon this place while trying to find a bar that wasn’t packed on a Monday. Awesome concept and killer music. Menu was hilarious, and bartender was super accommodating. Had the best penicillin here, and it was on the house too! Bartenders are super passionate, will definitely come again when I’m in town!

The Firehouse Hostel is keeping a burning-hot secret—a funky bar with live music and delicious cocktails. Formerly Austin’s oldest fire station, the hostel now offers cheap rooms for young travelers visiting Austin for the weekend. In 2012, the hostel built the Firehouse Lounge and, for over ten years, has hosted parties, live music, and karaoke nights. To enter the Firehouse Lounge, one must locate the bookcase in the hostel’s main lobby and search for the handle. Like a spy movie, the bookcase swivels open, revealing an intimate, swanky bar. Once inside, enjoy the bar’s extensive drink menu while listening to bands perform in the live music capitol of the world. For a local touch, sample a drink from the Bartender Originals section, or try something from the Chalkboard Cocktails for a familiar favorite.

This bar! A happy hour with craft cocktails is insane! I want to go back to Austin just for this place. They had a great dj for r&b night. Adrian and his crew were an absolute vibe. We had a few really good cocktails and even returned here after dinner to hang a bit more. The book case is so cute!

I rang the doorbell with my mother, not knowing what to expect. We went down narrow stairs, guided through a velvet curtain and discovered a cosy, psychedellic wonderland. Andrew the bartender, fixed me a uniquely flavored cocktail made with Tepache, a pineapple beer. So good! My mother had a great time as you can see in the pics. I would compare this place to a fine St Emilion wine, that matured since 1959. It has complex flavors and requires patience to notice them. Beautiful people, soulful curated tunes and magical cocktails, the experience was euphoric. Thank you for that.

The first time I was at Powder Room was with a party of 12 on a Saturday, and it definitely was the vibe you'd expect in downtown. Low lights, live DJs, crowded room, and amazing service. My boyfriend and I decided we needed to come back, and it is a completely different vibe earlier in the week. The lights were low, but the music was slow and just right and the atmosphere was just sultry and sexy. One of the managers, Paul, took care of us and made sure we had everything we needed and was constantly checking on us. It was a really lovely experience and we will definitely be back!

We all know that parking around Downtown Austin can be… well, let’s face it, a bit of a nightmare. So what if a garage offered a bit more than just a place to park your car on a night out? Meet Garage, a hip, industrial-style speakeasy hidden under a parking ramp between 5th and 6th Streets. To locate this bar, simply search for the “cocktails” sign painted in black lettering on the parking lot’s overhang. Patrons can enjoy the Indian Paintbrush, Garage’s signature cocktail, or more vintage drinks, like an Old Fashioned. If you’re feeling a bit snacky, check out Garage’s pizza menu, and sample one of its pies like the Dairyland Classic (mozzarella, provolone, vodka sauce, parmesan, and vincotto bianco) or The Kink (roasted garlic, mozzarella, mushrooms, kale, and ricotta). If you’re not in the mood for carbs, you can try its Caesar Salad, which features croutons made from pizza crust. The next time you’re looking for a funky spot in town, pull up to Garage and stay a while.

Garage was easily one of the coolest bars we visited in Austin. It’s tucked inside a parking garage and has that hidden, speakeasy-style feel without trying too hard to be one. It was packed when we arrived and we honestly weren’t sure we were going to get in, but since there were only two of us, we were able to squeeze into seats at the bar. We ended up staying for quite a while because the atmosphere was so good. The cocktails were great, but the bartenders really made the experience. They were friendly, attentive, and even gave us recommendations for other places to check out while we were in Austin. Such a unique space, great vibe, and completely different from the typical bars around downtown. I would absolutely recommend stopping here, especially if you’re looking for somewhere with a little more atmosphere and character.

10. Eden Cocktail Room

Temptation now has an RSVP list. At Eden Cocktail Room—a speakeasy themed around vice, virtue and the Garden of Eden—sinners and saints alike can enjoy a night of secrecy alongside delicious cocktails and occasional live music. Eden Cocktail Room’s entrance hides in plain sight behind a purple door in an alleyway behind 6th Street. A red light dangling above the door alerts patrons when the bar is open, welcoming them into a dimly lit room with a stellar ambiance and UV decorations. This speakeasy’s menu sports a blend of familiar favorites, such as Mai Tais and Manhattans, with Biblical-themed drinks, like Paradise Lost and Forbidden Fruit. For those wanting to try their hand at making one of these cocktails, mixology classes are available on the bar’s website. Given Eden Cocktail Room’s exclusivity, atmospheric lighting, and masterful decor, it’s no wonder why Austinites have fallen in love with this secret bar. Eve may have taken a bite of the forbidden fruit, but here, it comes garnished and ready to sip on.

I loved my experience at Eden Cocktail Room. I’m shocked that I’ve lived in Austin for years and I’ve been to 6th street dozens of times and never knew this place existed. The place has great ambiance and vibes. I’m a fan of speakeasies as they aren’t as packed as they are more hidden and intimate. And this place provides the perfect speakeasy experience. I enjoyed the music. The bartenders made great cocktails and the service was phenomenal. The cocktail list was robust. I would absolutely return here again.
