Fan Review: ROADRUNNER Album
R&B has always felt like home to me, the kind of sound that wraps itself around a moment and makes it unforgettable. Those soulful Sunday mornings, filled with my mom’s favorite tracks, shaped the way I understood comfort. Destin Conrad is an artist I naturally gravitate toward because his style of R&B feels like an emotional atmosphere more than just a sound. He’s the kind of artist whose work doesn’t just play in the background; it lingers and becomes part of your core memories.
But what happens when an artist like Destin decides to take a break from the genre that shaped their identity and established their audience? That question finds its answer in ROADRUNNER, an album that shows exactly what it looks like when an artist chooses to evolve beyond the sound they’re known for.

With his third studio album, ROADRUNNER, released on August 21, 2026, Destin returns to his Jamaican roots, paying homage to his culture and musical influences. The album explores a blend of reggae, dancehall, and afrobeats while still incorporating elements of alternative R&B, showcasing Destin’s versatility as an artist. This sound may be new to his audience, but his experience growing up within the culture allows him to approach it with authenticity, making the album feel both natural and genuine. This return to his roots also offers his listeners a deeper understanding of the experiences and influences that have shaped his sound. Through its fusion of genres and heartfelt lyrics, ROADRUNNER stands as one of Destin’s most personal and culturally reflective projects to date.
The album opens with the title track “ROADRUNNER.” Not only does it serve as the introduction of the album, but it is its centerpiece. The song is a blend of reggae-inspired rhythms that showcase smooth baselines and clean percussions, which gives the song an easygoing feeling. The song’s lyrics speak to themes of identity and living life as one’s true self. A lyric that stands out to me in this song is “Take the money out the bank, can’t take it to the grave.” This lyric on its surface can seem materialistic, but it serves as a reminder that life is meant to be experienced and to not place too much value on things we cannot keep forever. This was a great song that set the tone of the album’s overall message and sound.

At times, viral moments transcend the internet and make their way into music, by being used as references and samples for artists. This is no different for the creation of the song “Nervous” on the album. On Tiktok, there was a resurgence of the “Midu Mountain Song” or also known as “Midu Echoing,” which is a traditional Chinese folk song. Destin incorporates a sample of the song’s lyrics throughout the track, reflecting his ability to draw inspiration from a wide range of cultural and musical traditions while incorporating them in a thoughtful and tasteful manner. Including the sample was a clever move, as the song was already resonating with listeners worldwide, many of whom were captivated by the beauty and its tone. His song is very upbeat while still mixing light percussions with heavenly vocals. This makes it a nice track that you can easily move and groove too.
One of the album’s greatest strengths is its range. While some tracks are vibrant and melodic, others dive deeper into feelings of longing and heartbreak, allowing him to display a wider emotional depth.

One of my personal favorites from the album is the song titled “No More.” Shifting from a more upbeat sound to something slower, grounded, and melodic gave his lyrics room to expand the emotion behind them, allowing them to land with much more impact. He blends the reggae beats that you hear throughout the album with an R&B delivery. I believe this track is the perfect fit for his fan base, serving as a beautiful middle ground between his classic R&B style and the warmth of reggae. Some of my favorite lyrics from this track are “my friends think I’m changing” and “love don’t live here no more.” These lyrics perfectly encapsulate the essence of the song by acknowledging the changes that took place within a relationship and the process of letting it go.
You know those songs that just make you feel yourself in a way that you can’t describe? That is exactly what the song “I Love Your Body” makes me feel. When I am walking to class or just simply need a little boost to get me through the day, this has become the song I always play first. There is just something so special about its message. It almost feels like the lyrics and the music are both working together to give me this unexpected sense of encouragement. I feel like Destin is giving his listeners a big hug because of the gentle confidence that is being produced from the laid-back production and his signature soft vocals.

Overall, this is a 10/10 album that everyone should take the time to experience. Destin Conrad shows that it’s okay for your favorite artist to take a step back, explore new sounds, and grow in ways that feel true to who they are.
I wonder what he is going to do next. Maybe ROADRUNNER pt.2 or will he give us an entirely new sound. For now, we can only wait and see.
