17 Michelin Star Restaurants in Houston

Back in November 2024, The Michelin Guide held its first ceremony in Texas, where it recognized restaurants across the state for their culinary excellence. Seventeen restaurants with a Houston zip code were awarded either a one-star or Bib Gourmand distinction.

A Michelin Star is granted to restaurants with outstanding cooking. Very few restaurants earn even one star, which, according to Michelin, means the spot has “high quality cooking” and is “worth a stop.”

Michelin also awards the Bib Gourmand – an esteemed rating that highlights restaurants offering “delicious food at a moderate price.”

The criteria taken into account when awarding restaurants are as such: quality of the ingredients, harmony of flavours, mastery of techniques, personality of the chef as expressed through their cuisine, and consistency both across the entire menu and over time.

We provided an overview of all the Houston restaurants on the Michelin Awards list. Different price ranges and cuisines are honored on this list, from casual barbecue at The Pit Room to fine dining at Mussafer. Check out the top dining experiences in all of Houston below.

17 Michelin Star Restaurants in Houston

Theodore Rex is a contemporary American restaurant with a French twist. It’s located within the historic Eric City Iron Works building. The exposed brick, natural light, and long-stemmed fixtures create a cozy industrial-chic setting within the restaurant.

Shareable small plates are how you indulge at Theodore Rex. Local produce and seafood are presented in innovative ways, with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients. If you want to try somewhere familiar but still unique, this is the place to check out.

The Michelin guide’s menu highlights include fried bread with tomato fondant, Gulf redfish crusted in toast, and brûléed butter cake with strawberry jam, but the menu changes regularly, so make sure to check to see what’s available.

Currently, there is no dinosaur on the menu, but there is a coconut-glazed chicken breast. We say that’s close enough. If you need more whimsy in your life, Theodore Rex is the place to go.

Nancy’s Hustle is a welcoming hangout spot in East Downtown that is as cozy as it is cool. The wood paneling and vintage decorations in this modern bistro create a suave mid-century vibe that pairs perfectly with its lively atmosphere.

They are currently open six days out of the week, but Monday will soon be joining the party in early May. Nancy saw a large uptick in visitors after the Michelin Guide came out in November, and wanted to accommodate as many people as they could!

The rotating menu at Nancy’s Hustle blends global inspirations. They have spicy pork dumplings, wood-grilled chicken, and beef fat sticky rice all on the same menu.

You have to try out their burger, which is stacked on a housemade English muffin. Their Nancy Cakes are also a crowd favorite, with cultured butter and trout roe alongside the best cornmeal griddle cakes you’ve ever had. Everything here is exceptional, go see for yourself!

This authentic Texas BBQ serves up slow-smoked meats in a warm, casual setting. You can expect long lines at this counter service restaurant, but even better food.

The specialties here are the brisket, pork ribs, turkey, and house-made sausages, all smoked for over eighteen hours. If you have friends from out of town who want to get down with some real Texas BBQ, take them here.

If you want to skip out on the wait, order curbside pickup. They have bulk options to feed the full family and plates if you’re looking for a quick fix.

The original Truth BBQ opened in a small shack in Brenham back in 2015, but the somewhat new Houston Heights location is much larger. They offer the occasional class taught by my acclaimed pitmaster for those looking to learn the craft.

They have traditional sides like your beans and collard greens, but also some more experimental stuff, too, like the tater tot casserole with fried onions. This place is a modern classic we highly recommend.

Killen’s is considered one of Texas’s premier destinations for both BBQ and southern comfort food.

It’s also located in the Houston Heights and stands out with its top-tier ingredients. The cuts are deep and flavorful, with a signature pepper bark that will have you coming back for more.

Popular menu items include the pulled pork, jalapeño cheddar sausage, and smoked brisket. We love Killen’s for their sides, specifically their potato salad and flaky biscuits. They also have a large variety of vegetables for those looking for a meatless option.

On the southern side, you can’t go wrong with the classic buttermilk fried chicken or deviled eggs topped with pork belly. For dessert, they have house-made banana pudding and a warm German chocolate cake.

The menu at Killen’s is large and in charge. The authentic flavors are incredible and high quality, with upscale spins on classic Texas dishes. You are sure to walk away with a full stomach.

This James Beard-winning Thai restaurant originally opened in 2020 inside a gas station in the East End before moving to its current location in the Second Ward.

The outside is unassuming, but walk inside and you’ll find a vibrant, neon-lit dining room complete with Thai hip-hop tunes serenading you from every corner.

At Street to Kitchen, authentic Thai street food is law. Start your night with fiery Som Tam and charred Pad See Ew before moving on to the main course. They have house-made curries like rich green and creamy massaman that are sure to knock your socks off.

The Drunken Noodles and Tom Yum Fried Rice are two standout dishes we love as well. Everything here has a kick, even at medium spice level, so make sure to pair your food with Street to Kitchen’s frozen Thai tea cocktails.

This spot stands out for its daring cuisine that is classic and bold. If you’re ready to turn the heat up on your next night out, Street to Kitchen is where it’s at.

This Montrose spot serves up European comfort food with live-fire cooking and seasonal ingredients. It’s got a laid-back charm that is perfect for the eclectic neighborhood it’s housed within.

Guests are welcomed in with a barrage of bubbles, the perfect opener to entice them to check out the rest of Rosie Cannonballs’ extensive wine list. Their beverage program is meticulously curated with natural wines and Italian-inspired cocktails.

On the food side, offerings include Italian favorites like pizza and pasta. Their crisp focaccia di Recco is filled with robiola cheese and mortadella.

To my lactose-intolerant people – it’s worth it. The blistered bean salad and southern smoked pizza are two other fan favorites we love.

Most of the menu items are crafted with culinary finesse over on Rosie Cannonball’s wood-fried oven, which we deeply appreciate. Make sure to finish off your meal with a wedge of their honey cake. You won’t regret it!

Another Montrose spot, The Pit Room, is here to deliver high-quality Texas BBQ with a Tex-Mex twist. It’s the two things Houston does best mixed into one spot. What more could we want?

The brisket here is juicy as can be, the house-made sausages are packed to the brim with pepper, and the mac & cheese is to die for. Sides like the marinated tomato salad and charred beans go perfectly with the prime meats.

The Pit Room also had the brilliant idea to use brisket trimmings to make tortillas, which are used in their pulled pork tacos and can be ordered as a side. We recommend you try them with the hatch chile queso.

You will find plenty of seating here on both the indoor and outdoor patio. The service is excellent, and the wait is considered a lot shorter than what you would typically expect of a premier BBQ restaurant. Make sure to find time for the best fusion in the city!

8. Pinkerton’s Barbecue

Pinkerton’s Barbecue

1504 Airline Dr, Houston, TX 77009

Pinkerton’s Barbecue is situated in Houston’s Greater Heights and is considered one of the best BBQ places not just in Houston, but in all of Texas.

Pitmaster and namesake Grant Pinkerton used to live above the joint, so there is no questioning his dedication to the craft.

Their USDA Prime brisket is smoked in custom-built barrel pits over oak and mesquite. It comes melting and juicy – no sauce necessary.

Their dual offering of wet-mop and dry-rub ribs are a rare find in Houston. The beef one in particular is amazing, and often sells out before midday.

Pinkerton’s sides are just as flavorful as their meats. They take a creative approach to your typical BBQ sides, with stuff like jalapeño‑cheese rice and smoked duck & sausage jambalaya standing out among the others.

Pinkerton’s also has a full bar, which means visitors can nurse a cool cocktail while slamming down the exceptional BBQ. I can’t think of a better way to spend my afternoon.

The Michelin guide classifies this place as a “home away from home,” and we can’t help but agree.

The restaurant is named after the owner’s grandmother and is located within a 1930s bungalow in Montrose. It’s truly a hidden gem.

Lively vinyl spun tunes set the scene for your meal, which is sure to remind you of your own grandmother’s cooking, just elevated and presented on small plates. The hospitality is warm, and the interior is as inviting as it comes.

We recommend the Texas tartare, silky milk bread with “everything butter,” and fried quail stuffed with German potato salad. If the dish is something you haven’t heard of before, the flavors are sure to take you straight home.

Vegetable offerings include grilled carrots with coconut curry and peanut sesame chicken. For dessert, you’re going to have to choose one of Nobie’s rotating selection of daily-baked pies. You don’t have to choose just one. Just make sure you save room!

CasaEma, previously named Ema, started as a pop-up bakery that has now expanded into a premier Houston Heights restaurant.

Head here anytime of the day, and you are sure to get some of the best Mexican cuisine you’ve ever had.

This daytime eatery is known for its pan dulce and pastries. These sweet dishes make stopping by a treat all on their own, even if you’ve already had a meal. The blue corn concha and guava-queso empanadas are two of the best.

It’s also of utmost importance that your sugar craving gets filled with their premier horchata berlinese. These famous cream cheese donuts are creamy and filling without being too overwhelming.

Chilaquiles are topping off the savory side, but they have to be paired with a nice cup of coffee, one of the many things CasaEma does best.

CasaEma has you covered with indigenous Mexican flavors and homegrown care for everything they do.

If Sichuan’s what you’re craving, you have to go to Bellaire’s Chinatown and stop by Mala Sichuan Bistro.

The restaurant has expanded to Katy, Sugar Land, Montrose, and the Heights, but it still maintains those classic flavors that put it on Michelin’s radar.

Whether it’s Dan Dan noodles, Water Boiled Fish, Mapo Tofu, or spicy Lamb Wontons, your mouth is sure to be on fire by the meal. Mala presents its dishes with a distinct tang and bitterness that bites in the best way possible.

Sichuan places can often be known to be pretty heavy-handed with the chili oil, but Mala Sichuan Bistro takes a lighter approach. Their measured spicing lets the dishes shine without being too overpowering.

Their slurp-worthy noodles are house-made, and their fish is always cooked to perfection. Make sure to invite your heat-seeking friends to this heat-seeking oasis for a night of flavor and fun.

Houston has some of the best country’s best Vietnamese fare, and no place proves that more than Nam Giao.

It’s tucked in a strip mall within Little Saigon, but don’t let the humble exterior fool you. This place knows how to cook.

The Hue-style cuisine is served in a sleek, no-frills space. It’s all about the taste at Nam Giao. You must start off with bánh bèo chén – little steamed rice cakes topped with fried pork rinds and chives, and bánh khòai – crispy tapioca pancakes layered with bean sprouts.

The dishes here are served in small ramekins or wrapped in leaf bundles. It’s small portions, which means you get to order a lot of stuff to the table and try everything out.

The grilled flank steak is an exceptional offering that comes with spongy bundles of vermicelli.

If it’s your prerogative to find top-notch casual Viet food that will fill you out for a relatively cheap price, make sure to head on over to Nam Giao.

13. BCN Taste & Tradition

bcn taste and tradition

4210 Roseland St, Houston, TX 77006

BCN Taste & Tradition brings the essence of Catalonia to Houston. Within the restaurant’s white stucco bungalow, you will find premier Spanish cuisine dished up under the helm of Barcelona native Chef Luis Roger.

The seafood is fresh and masterfully cooked, as shown in their tender grilled branzino with avocado and grapefruit foam.

You can get sea cucumber atop lobster rice and thinly sliced octopus with smoked paprika here as well. All presented beautifully in an inviting environment.

Curated Spanish wines and an impressive gin and tonic program complemented the meal. Preparations like the Iberian sucking pig have a crackling crust, with tender meat and a rich red wine sauce.

The entire restaurant is decorated with owner Ignacio Torras’s private art collection, which includes Pablo Picasso’s owl jugs. Just like the food, the interior is refined while still celebrating cultural tradition.

The atmosphere, drinks, and food at BCN Taste & Tradition are sure to transport you straight to Spain, no flight needed.

This Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant is truly a destination. Chef Felipe Riccio and sommelier June Rodil came together to create a creative menu that celebrates the Mediterranean.

Its immersive tasting menu focuses on different regions. Their current season, La Serenissima: The Republic of Venice, reflects on Venetian cuisine.

March does extensive research when crafting their rotating menus to make sure authenticity is at the forefront of every dish.

Visitors will start their experience in a stylish lounge area, where they can sip on cocktails and small bites before entering the main dining room.

The storytelling is the draw here, each flavor pulling you into the lifeblood of its region and history.

March is adorned with color and lavish details. The pastel walls and art-deco furniture create an atmosphere that embraces creativity.

This is our go-to for special occasions. If there is one nice restaurant that is worth the price tag, it’s March.

Le Jardiner may have locations in cool places like Miami and New York City, but we are here to talk about the best location in the coolest place of them all. That’s right – Houston.

We know it’s the best location because it is set with the Kinder Building at the Museum of Fine Arts. There is no better place to put a refined French restaurant than within a refined art museum.

Artistic expression is found throughout Le Jardinier Houston. The dining room opens to sculpture garden vistas and is adorned with custom art installations. You feel involved in the natural world while visiting.

This atmosphere is complemented by hyper-seasonal ingredients. It doesn’t matter if it’s the zucchini spaghetti with yellow pepper coulis or the garden salad with fresh peaches – everything here is green and earthy.

As we would expect, the beverages are just rich. French wines and elegant cocktails are a must. All elements of Le Jardinier blend seemingly together and can’t be described as anything other than slick and smooth.

Musaafer means “traveler” in Hindi, and there is no better word we would use to describe a restaurant that feels like it should be an international destination.

The two-story space is located in the Galleria and is a very popular spot for upscale Indian cuisine.

The soaring arches, carved wooden pillars, and vaulted ceilings you see while entering make you feel like you’ve just walked into a palace. The food is the royalty, inspired by all 29 Indian states visited by the chefs.

Dishes like prawn moilee with coconut and curry leaves are offered in both à la carte and tasting‑menu formats.

The dal is simmered for 72 hours, and the kofta is made with Texas wagyu. A true exchange of cultures is found here, in this modern labyrinth.

Going to Musaafer is an experience you will never forget. The dramatic’s may be played up, but that is what we love about this luxurious restaurant. It’s a spectacle you can’t miss out on, with creative presentation and even better flavors.

Sometimes, the best places can be found in the most unassuming of settings. That couldn’t be more true for Tatemó, a high-brow Mexican restaurant that just so happens to exist in a humble strip mall.

Tatemó is all about their heirloom corn, which is featured in almost every dish. Chef Emmanuel Chaez infuses excellence into everything he puts out – from the gorditas to the ceviche to the plantain-corn tortillas.

We recommend you give the 7-course tasting menu a try. We promise – the chefs here are skilled enough that the corn never gets tiring. Vibrant salads and creative sauces add a little special something to everything you eat and make sure nothing gets too boring.

Tatemó is BYOB, so make sure to grab a bottle or two before heading on over. The foodie heaven has won more awards than we can count. Their identity is built around Mesoamerican tradition and showcasing the diversity of heirloom corn. You have to visit.

Conclusion

With these Michelin star restaurants and even more with a Bib Gourmand, we can honestly say Houston doesn’t miss when it comes to eating out.

Michelin is one of the most renowned dining guides in the world, and its debut in the Lone Star State was one we couldn’t wait for any longer. While we may be biased, we don’t think it’s unfair to say that Texas is up there with all the other foodie destinations.

It’s great to see our local chefs and long championed institutions get the recognition they deserve. Houston has a wide culinary portfolio, from New American to Mexican to French to Vietnamese to everywhere else, we are diverse in what we eat.

If you haven’t checked any of these places out, make sure to give them a shot. All the restaurants on this list are creative and unique, with flavorful dishes representative of their chefs’ vision. The best of Houston is waiting for you to stop by!
