Smurfs (2025) Movie Review
The Smurfs are back on the big screen with The Smurfs (2025) a reimagining that will have you feeling anything but down and blue. This reset of our favorite little blue village serves as a breath of fresh air, bringing you a new fresh story, some new fun characters and a medley of moments the whole family can enjoy.
This movie stars Rihanna as Smurfette, while she also serves as a producer in the film. She is joined by a star studded cast consisting of James Corden as our main character No Name Smurf, John Goodman as Papa Smurf, and Octivia Spencer as Asmodius.

The Plot
While everyone in the Smurfs village serves a purpose and have found what makes them so originally them, No Name Smurf sadly seems to be having trouble finding his footing in the world, not knowing what or who he is meant to be. He tries everything, but seemingly starts to lose hope. That is until he comes across a magic book that seemingly grants his wish to be special, be original and most importantly, be magical. No Name then shares the news with Smurfette, and the rest of the Smurf Village about his newly found identity. Little does he know however that Razamel, the even more despicable and evil brother of Gargamel, has been after that book and its magic for years. This causes Papa Smurf to be abducted as a form of retaliation and ransom, as he allegedly knows about the book’s whereabouts and existence.
Now it’s the Smurf’s job to save Papa Smurf and save the day. They take a portal that brings them into the real world where they meet Papa Smurf’s long lost brother, Ken, as well as the Snooterpoots, led by their strong willed guardian Mama Poot. Along the way, No Name has an adventure of self discovery as well, while Smurfette also starts to look at herself from within, questioning whether she really is who she believes herself to be.

Comparison to Smurfs Films of the Past
This film is definitely a rebirth and reimagining of the franchise considering the things it brings forward as fresh and new concepts. First starting with the art style. While the last Smurf’s film franchise adopted a more very realistic three dimensional style of our favorite little blue friends, the new Smurf’s movie adopts a more animated and cartoon approach, obviously taking some inspirations from this new wave of animation style that started to catch on and become popular after the release of Spiderman: Into the Spider Verse. This makes perfect sense as the Smurf’s franchise originally started off a comic book series, just a little fun fact for you. This works well for the film as the art style is completely gorgeous, you can tell a lot of love and detail went into creating the world of the Smurf’s.
The plot takes a bit of a turn as well, focusing on Razamel as the new lead villain of the film, rather than the traditional Gargamel storyline and further adding depth into Gargamel’s character. Overall this movie is a fresh take on the Smurf’s film franchise and is a welcome one that is here to stay.

Review
Personally, I really enjoyed Smurfs (2025). The plot is easy to follow, and enjoyable for viewers of any age. The characters are dynamic, fun and colorful, providing you with a fun cast of charismatic characters that are easy to love, and fun to hate. Some of my personal favorite characters were Sound Effects Smurf and the Turtle, played by , who were great comic relief and provided some fun goofy moments throughout the film. That brings me into my next talking point, the casting. This star studded cast definitely made its mark as every actor’s character and voice acting was so brilliant and enjoyable. James Corden especially as the main character, No Name Smurf, stole the show as being a relatable protagonist who you want to root for. The screen writing and dialogue of the film was very clever and a delight to follow as well. The writers definitely knew the strengths of every character and understood how to make them volley off of each other.
The world and set design was nothing short of breathtaking as well, every setting, from the Smurf’s village, to the depiction of Paris, to Razamel’s castle, all provided visually appealing aesthetics that made you truly feel the tone and vibe of the film and the situations the Smurfs found themselves in. Overall the movie was a great enjoyable watch, and one I would recommend to movie goers, friends, and families across the nation.

Final Thoughts
Smurfs (2025) film brings some bold, yet welcoming changes to the Smurfs films of the past. From an overhaul of its art style, to a wonderful recasting, to an enjoyable and compelling storyline, this film truly has it all while also being a visual treat, with its incredible world building.
The film’s plot is also one that is fun, relatable, and can be enjoyed by all ages, expressing themes of self expression, love, kindness, and choosing who you are. If you want a fun movie you can watch with the whole family, I cannot recommend Smurfs (2025) enough.
