10 Live Music and Concert Venues in Houston

Houston may not be the Texas City best known for its live-music scene, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some great places to check out for a concert or two.

Big names have come to perform here, even if we aren’t the “live music capital of the world.”

Besides touring headliners, Houston has a rich local music scene that is often overlooked. Many of the venues below have the mind to fix that, and often highlight bands and individual talent that call Houston their home.

Places like the Toyota Center and White Oak Music Hall bring in thousands of guests each month for well-known celebrity headliners – they are just the tip of Houston’s live-music iceberg.

There are tons of iconic music venues here in Houston that host bands and artists spanning every genre. In this guide, we will highlight some smaller live music venues, as well as some newer ones you may not have heard of.

It’s time to turn those headphones off and get in your car. These are the music venues in Houston you need to check out for the best live music in the city.

10 Music and Concert Venues in Houston

Dan Electro’s is one of the classics in Houston’s live music scene. Established in 1988, the venue started as a gritty guitar bar that evolved into the country-loving neon venue you see today.

They opened in a North Heights warehouse in the late eighties and quickly gained recognition for hosting iconic acts like the legend Stevie Ray Vaughan.

They recently got a makeover that improved the venues’ acoustics and interior back in 2022.

Our favorite thing about Dan Electro’s is happens every Tuesday, when they host Shawn Allen’s Music Jam. It’s the city’s longest-running open music jam with a rich history that connects celebrities through music.

Despite threats of being shut down and multiple changes in ownership, Dan Electro’s has still managed to maintain its guitar-strutted soul.

They aim to create a space where artists can truly connect and share their love of music. Please stop by this Houston classic to explore the local music scene and meet some awesome people!

2. The Continental Club - Houston

The Continental Club

3700 Main St, Houston, TX 77002

Now, don’t be disappointed. I know putting this branch of the Austin staple on my list may be considered cheating – we are talking about Houston venues here – but as a part-time Austinite myself, I just had to shout it out.

The Continental Club in Houston has been rocking and rolling for 27 years and has had a major life of its own. The venue has hosted big-time artists like U2 and Roy Head as well as Houston legends like Roy Head and Archie Bell.

The club used to be a vintage general store before it was redone in 1999 by the former owner and manager of Austin’s Continental Club. They wanted to revitalize Houston’s main street and provide the area a go-to stop for all things music.

The Continental Club’s little brother next door – The Big Top Lounge is another great place to check out, with its circus-themed decor and exciting shows. Make sure to check both spots out the next time you’re in Midtown!

3. Black Magic Social Club

black magic social club

7036 Harrisburg Blvd, Houston, TX 77011

Are you a heavy metal maniac? A lover of the occult? Then head on over to the Black Magic Social Club!

This self-proclaimed “evil little bar with a stage” was established in 2022 and is the perfect place to down a drink with some serenading hardcore rock playing in the background.

The venue doesn’t have a website, so check their Instagram for information on upcoming shows. It’s also twenty-one plus, so make sure to keep the kids at home when you head out for the night.

Black Magic Social Club is pretty small, with a capacity of around one hundred people, but it makes up for it with excellent bookings and a cohesive aesthetic you won’t find anywhere else in the city.

Take one step in and it’s you will find out pretty quickly that this place is for fans of all things witchery. This loud little bar is where you go when you want things to get dark.

Last Concert Cafe is Houston’s oldest live music venue. It used to be a restaurant and live music venue, but nowadays you can only buy the food if you go to an event.

I say – better reason to go see the genre-spanning live music hosted at this colorful Houston stable.

This place has been around since the forties and used to be a bordello before being transformed into a restaurant turned music venue. It’s in the Warehouse district and has a big door you can’t miss!

Last Concert Cafe has two main areas for shows: Dawn’s Margarita Garden and the Backyard Amphitheater. Their upcoming shows can be found on their website. They are all 18+ unless otherwise noted.

Besides hosting concerts, Last Concert Cafe can be rented for personal events. It’s a great place to host a graduation party or wedding reception!  Make sure to stop by for a show we know you will love!

If cramped spaces, loud music, and mosh pits are what come to mind when you think of live music, you should definitely pay a visit to The End.

The End rose from the ashes of the pandemic, taking the place of many popular venues that shut down during that time.

The End has two stages, one indoor and one outdoor. Their sister space is called The Compound, and it also puts on great shows. From punk to death metal – The End has everything a hardcore fan could want in a music venue.

This venue is the perfect place to spend a night out, with its cheap drinks and excellent sound quality. They blend punk and goth aesthetics to create a dark environment that is perfect for a concert where you will be moving up and down.

Check their website for what’s happening in the next couple of months. They have some great shows you don’t want to skip out on.

6. The Heights Theater

the heights theater

339 W 19th St, Houston, TX 77008

This movie theater turned music venue is as iconic as they come. Its art-deco exterior is eye-catching and memorable – often the first thing people picture when they think of the Heights.

The venue has been an antique store, an art gallery, an event space, and now, a place for both local and touring artists to jam out in one of the coolest buildings Houston’s got.

They host a wide variety of artists that span all genres of music.

The Heights Theater has only been a music venue since 2016, but it has quickly worked up the list to be one of Houston’s best. It can accommodate up to 500 people, and tickets can be bought through their website.

The Heights Theater also has a full bar and free parking – both major pluses in my book. The modern musical acts mixed with the retro aesthetic make for a time-warping experience we fully recommend.

Echoes is where good food meets good music. The restaurant offers hand-crafted Greek and Mexican-inspired tapas and mezedes for brunch, dinner, and late-night listening. The music is just as fresh as the hand-crafted dishes.

They have new artists come and play at their venue weekly, but also staples, like legendary rhythm and blues band Curley Cormier and The Gladiators, who play every second Saturday of the month.

This live DJ bar has its own playlist on its website, if you want to figure out what the venue’s sound is. It’s la ittle Fleetwood Mac, a little Sade, and a lot of Prince. Their upcoming live events can also be found on their website.

Echoes also has some great cocktails to go along with the music, like the Mikis Spritz and Aphrodite’s Martini. You can’t go wrong with anything on their drink menu.

No matter who you see, Echoes will make sure both your stomach and ears are satiated. We know you want to check them out!

This folk and acoustic nightclub in Montrose is Houston’s home for the singer-songwriter. It started as a cafe and evolved into a popular counterculture music venue in the late sixties and early seventies.

Original music is what makes Anderson Fair stand out. They really carved out a niche for creativity here – it’s a place where you can here artists you’ve likely never heard of before sing songs that are new and fresh.

If you’re going to a concert at Anderson Fair, its rich history is part of the reason you’re there. The building itself is a time capsule, with its famous red brick floors and mid-century furniture fixtures.

Don’t miss out on a show at one of the oldest still-operating acoustic music venues in the United States. However, if you really can’t make a show, you’ll be happy to know they live-stream each concert online.

Anderson Fair has a deep history that you can feel the second you walk in. It’s Houston-blooded through and through.

This one may be a much larger music hall in Houston, but we still think it deserves a spot on this list, especially since it was established so recently. 713 Music Hall opened in 2021 in a building that has a rich history.

The venue used to train depot, then was later renovated into the east wing of the United States Postal Service Houston headquarters before it became a music hall. They have hosted some high-profile guests, including the pseudo-jazz artist Layvey and country rapper Lil Nas X.

713 Music Hall has room for 5,000 guests in total. It has options for both standing and seated ticket options for both its ground floor and elevated floor.

There are various lounge and bar areas spread throughout the venue, so taking a sometimes-needed break is never an issue.

713 Music Hall may be new to the Houston music scene, but we think it’s a welcome addition. Also, it’s literally right next to POST Houston. What more could you want?

Warehouse Live in East Downtown. I mean, even Prince chose to perform here – you couldn’t do better.

We will forever miss this Houston gem; however, the new Warehouse Live, which is located in Midtown, is becoming a new favorite.

It came from the old Rise Rooftop, which underwent major renovations to transform into Warehouse Live Midtown in 2023.

The venue is independently owned and is still able to compete with the corporate players. We think that has all to do with their “immersive audio-visual experience,” i.e., their crazy lights and sounds.

They have a top-notch system that will invoke a full-body experience whenever someone is on stage. The new Warehouse Live also has a fully retractable roof, making it both an indoor and outdoor venue, depending on the day.

To all my people who want to get down, Warehouse Live is where you need to head up. We are serious… even if it is, you know, downtown.

Conclusion

Houston has so many great local bands, musicians, and artists that flock to these venues nightly for standout performances that rival touring hits.

There is a rich musical community here, and the only way we can support it and keep these venues open is by showing up. There are so many lesser-known places to go for live music in the city. What are you waiting for?

Electric places like Black Magic Social Club and The End put on mind-bending shows nightly, while classic venues like Dan Electros and Anderson Fair maintain their status as Houston’s most iconic through genre-bending consistency.

Newer venues like 713 Music Hall are quickly making a name for themselves with popular upcoming headliners like Ethel Cain and Cage the Elephant.

These are the titular music venues in Houston you need to check out before you die. We have every genre, from Rock to Folk to EDM, being presented on these excellent stages. It doesn’t matter what type of music floats your boat; there is a venue in the city for you.
