Walton’s Fancy and Staple Review

Emily Barrett | February 7, 2022

Walton’s Fancy and Staple, located on historic 6th street in downtown Austin, is home to a full menu of delicious sandwiches, soups, and salads, as well as an array of coffee drinks, desserts, and a full breakfast menu. Upon entering, the historic heart of the establishment welcomes you in. Walton’s was established as a Florist and Nursery in Westlake Hills in 1969, and its current location holds true to its beginning, with plants and succulents for sale complimenting its exposed brick walls.

The Menu

After pondering the menu, we landed on the most popular menu item: the Turkey Sweet sandwich. The cold turkey sandwich on a house-made croissant incorporates a caramelized-apple chutney, sweetening it just enough to taste like childhood Thanksgiving dinners.

Secondly, we ordered “The Fancy Lunch,” selecting a pair made up of the Local Salad, along with the Tomato Basil Soup. The salad comes dressed in a jalapeno berry vinaigrette, perfectly complemented by its pecans and feta. The soup, both creamy and flavorful, was unlike any we had ever had.

Drinks

Accompanying lunch, we ordered from the extensive array of espresso, coffee, and tea. First, we tried specialty latte– the housemade caramel. We ordered our’s iced with almond milk, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also tried the chai tea latte, which was by far our favorite. Personally, chai tea is not often my go-to, but this latte was the perfect balance of flavors, and honestly the best chai I have ever had.

The Sweets

Best known for their desserts, we couldn’t wait to try a couple. After much debate, we landed on a lemon tart and triple chocolate brownie. The lemon tart, topped with fresh blackberries and wrapped in a flaky crust, was incredibly sweet and refreshing. We agreed that even on the cold, January day that we visited Walton’s, their lemon tart tasted like summer.

The triple chocolate brownie was topped with a chocolate frosting and baked with chocolate chunks. While incredibly delicious, it is extremely rich, and therefore a good one to share among your party.

We’ll Be Back

Overall, we had a fantastic experience at Walton’s, and I cannot recommend it enough. The atmosphere is inviting, like walking into an establishment you’ve known all your life, and the staff was incredibly friendly, only emphasizing the family feel. This Austin favorite is a must-visit, whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or meeting friends for a weekday lunch.
