Gelato and Ice Cream Worth The Calories in Austin
Will McKinney
September 4, 2026There are few experiences more pleasurable than standing beneath a summer sky with a melting scoop of ice cream in your hand. From the snowy delicacies of ancient Persia to the elegant gelato of Renaissance Italy, the artisan craft of frosted creamy desserts was refined into cultural centerpieces. Today, the average American consumes eighteen to twenty pounds of ice cream each year, and the United States produces 1.23 to 1.38 billion gallons annually—that’s about 2,090 Olympic swimming pools.
Austin’s gelaterias and creameries reflect the same creativity and ingenuity that drives its unique artistic and cultural spaces. This guide explores the city’s finest ice cream and gelato shops that you should check out this year.
10 Gelato and Ice Cream Worth The Calories in Austin

What a great place if you are craving for some ice cream. It’s such a cute spot to have dessert, they have different flavors and other options like affogato, hot chocolate, coffee. The place is small but they have seats inside and outside. The service was great. I tried the Chocolate flavor with ricotta honey pistachio and was SO GOOD! I’ll definitely come back to try more!

ent here recently with some friends and had a great time! we went around 4pm and there was only 1 guy working, so we did have to wait a tad for our orders. not super long though! and he did do his best, even explaining how the whole place worked :-) it was a very easy process— pick a fruit to mix with vanilla (or just plain vanilla), pick some toppings, and it’s done! you wait in line to order and can go sit down to wait to be called. it’s nice that they have a speaker so you’re able to sit in the large seating area rather than standing around the pickup window. also, the seating area has a big misting fan, which is much appreciated during the heat. i know that area is reserved just for zed’s (there are other food trucks around), but it’s still part of the experience! the ice cream itself was super tasty! i know it’s in the name, but you can really taste that they use real fruit. made me feel good getting a sweet treat that’s also not super artificial. overall, i had a great time! i’ll definitely be back again :-)

Lick Honest Ice Cream was founded in Austin in 2011, and is known for its small-batch ice cream sourced from Texas ingredients. The company partners with local farms, dairies, and artisans to design innovative seasonal flavors. My favorite flavors were roasted beet and fresh mint, and goat cheese, thyme, and honey! Alongside these rotating seasonal offerings, Lick also serves classic favorites and dairy-free options. Every flavor is made without artificial colors, flavoring, or preservatives.

Got to come here for the first time while we were walking in the lake park! Twas a great choice coming here because the quality of ice cream 🍨 was really good! I tried dark chocolate with olive oil and sea salt and hill country honey vanilla beans for sampling! I really enjoyed both of them! At the end, I got beets with fresh mint and vanilla! What a relief in hot summer! Will definitely be back there for the second round!

Austin, y'all are sleeping on this place - get out of the line in Lalaland (you've been waiting for 20 mins and the line hasn't moved much) and go here instead. Get an espresso and a scoop of gelato. This place was incredible, and all the flavors we tried were super tasty. They make it all there, on site! Best gelato I've had - really follows traditional Italian method.

The flavors are so delicious we went with cookie dough and birthday cake was very creamy and and sweets. I love that it comes with waffle chips on the side the only downside why provide free water for customers but it’s not purified water. It’s tapwater it tasted nasty. The only bad review I have for this place. Other than that, this place smells like waffles. Very delicious. Definitely do recommend it. I can’t wait to try other flavors.

Loved the flavours! Ordered the triple scoop: chocolate honeycomb, damn good chocolate and brownie points. Loved all of them. Brownie points is a vanilla ice cream with brownie and caramel. Chocolate honeycomb tastes exactly like it sounds. Damn good chocolate was, to my liking, a little bitter (but I suppose dark chocolate is meant to taste that way) I enjoyed all the three flavors.

Super delicious and very creamy ice cream. The cashier was super nice and let us sample some flavors as we were skeptical by the descriptions. We tried the banana shoyu, which was super interesting. There was a strong banana flavor that didn't taste artificial, but the shoyu really threw us off as it was very salty and lingered on the tongue. We didn't end up getting it but it was good try. We go the Mango Sticky Rice and their seasonal Yuzu Watermelon and Guava Plum. The Mango Sticky Rice was our favorite. The freshness of the mango was so scrumptious and it was super creamy. The Yuzu Watermelon is a sorbet and tasted like fresh watermelon, though there wasn't a strong yuzu flavor. Lastly, the Guava Plum had more guava taste than plum, but it was also very good and super creamy!

The Yard Milkshake Bar of Austin is located in the Domain and is known for its extravagant milkshakes and edible cookie dough creations. Founded in Alabama in 2017, the company quickly expanded nationwide, with its Austin location becoming the first in Texas. Each milkshake is made with specialty ice cream, served in a mason jar, and topped with elaborate combinations of brownies, cookies, donuts, cake, candy, whipped cream, and sprinkles. They serve some of the largest ice cream desserts I’ve seen in my life. While the sugary concoctions are undeniably indulgent, the shop is also accessible for those looking for a fun, shareable dessert experience.
