SusieCakes – A Classic Bakery

Opening a new location right on West 6th street, SusieCakes brings you back to the past with its nostalgic, made from scratch desserts. This timeless bakery brings you simplicity at its finest. Founded 18 years ago by Susie herself, she began this bakery with her Grandmother’s recipes, using traditional household ingredients and has since expanded from California to Texas. As Susie told me herself, “If it was not in the pantry in 1950, we do not bake with it.”

The Ambiance

Walking in, the bakery takes you to a nostalgic atmosphere with its aquamarine walls and a big white vintage cake on display. There is a wide assortment of cakes sold by the slice, cupcakes, cookies, pies, and even whole cakes already decorated and ready to purchase. The concept is simple, homemade treats that are made fresh daily.

The Sweets

One of the first treats I tried were the cupcakes. Frosted with buttercream icing, these cupcakes were so sweet yet so good. They were light and airy and the texture was so soft to bite. The chocolate cupcake had just the right amount of chocolate with its balance of deep cacao and sweet flavors. As for the SusiePink vanilla cupcake, it is the star of the show with its pink pastel frosting. With its timeless vanilla taste and eye-catching appearance, this dessert is a perfect combination of flavor and aesthetics.

Moving on to the cake, I was granted the opportunity to try two different flavors: the southern red velvet and the classic marble cake. The red velvet cake was moist with subtle cocoa notes and cream cheese frosting that is smooth and creamy. As for the classic marble cake, the vanilla and chocolate layers were beautifully swirled making it not just visually appealing but a wonderful mix of flavors. The combination of the two provide a rich flavor where the flavors are able to shine.

While I was there, I was provided a goodie bag with two cupcakes that were UT themed and decorated. The vanilla cupcake was coated with white frosting on top and lined with white sprinkles around the side. It had the great longhorn logo right in the center. As for the chocolate cupcake, it was coated with burnt orange frosting and white sprinkles around the side. The words “Hook ‘em” were beautifully piped right in the middle. These gorgeous cupcakes are not only great for longhorn fans, but they taste absolutely amazing, it is love with each bite.
