My Experience at Pease Park

Pease Park, located in the heart of central Austin along Shoal Creek, has been one of my favorite go-to spots in college. In a city that’s always roaring with live music, food trucks and special events, it’s nice to have a place to slow down and be still. For me, that was Pease Park. I discovered it in the second semester of my freshman year, while I was living in a dorm about five minutes away. I always heard it was a fun place to go with friends or walk, read, explore nature or just relax. I never thought I had the time for it, so I always kept it at the back of my mind. When I went for the first time, I realized finding calm places like this park is something I should’ve made time for way before. Pease Park truly has something for everyone, and when you’re there, you feel like you can pause, take a deep breath and ground yourself with a break from school and the loud city. Its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty make it a joyous place that will lighten up any mood.

The first time I went to Pease Park, I was drawn in by its long, shaded paths that line the park and its overall happy ambiance. Walking down the paths, I saw people walking with their friends, owners playing catch with their pets and families with their kids laughing on the playground. Everywhere I went, I sensed a strong feeling of community. The expansive, open green lawns that expand across the park are filled with picnic blankets and games, and the shaded pavilion nearby has people silently reading, resting and chatting.

The trails eventually led me to the Shoal Creek Trail, where I saw bikers, dog walkers and runners all sharing the path. The sound of the creek’s rushing water added the perfect touch of charm and made the experience feel grounding. I continued exploring and came across a massive structure called the treehouse, a dome-shaped enclosure lined with webbed netting that makes up the walls. When I climbed in and laid in the middle of the net, I had the perfect birdseye view of the entire park. As I was taking everything in, I noticed that the sun was setting and creating a beautiful sunset, which made the moment feel perfect. I had never felt so at peace, and I started to realize the importance of connecting with nature.

Pease Park also shines as an event space. Since 1974, the park has hosted Austin’s annual Eeyore’s birthday party event, hosting live music, drum circles, costumes and games. The event is attended by thousands every year, and it’s amazing to see how one park can unite huge communities. On the weekends, you’ll also see yoga and workout groups stretching on the lawn or people playing instruments under the tree’s shade. These events transform the park into a stage for creativity and connection, keeping Austin’s eclectic culture alive. Pease Park isn’t just a little getaway; it’s a place that joins people from all different backgrounds, and that’s what Austin is all about.

Being at Pease Park opened my eyes to the importance of giving ourselves a break. In college, it’s easy to quickly get overwhelmed by the loads of schoolwork, tight schedules and the bustling city of Austin. Having places like Pease Park that offer a place to quiet down and connect with nature helps ease our minds and escape the chaos. Everything about the park- from the dogs roaming freely to the kids laughing and playing- is a constant reminder to slow down, be present and enjoy what’s in front of you instead of worrying about what’s next. Whether you’re looking to relax, walk with friends or just to ground yourself, Pease Park truly has it all. It’s such a special place that exerts constant happiness, unity and a feeling of belonging.
