My Experience at Deep Eddy Pool
Deep Eddy Pool, the oldest swimming pool in Texas, has been a go-to spot for Austinites for over a century. Located just minutes from downtown but tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, the pool feels like a step back in time. Deep Eddy’s story started way before it became a public pool. In the early 1900s, the site was part of a privately owned resort and amusement park. The name “Deep Eddy” came from a deep hole in the Colorado River that created a swirling eddy, a natural swimming hole for locals. By 1915, it had transformed into a concrete pool, and later, the City of Austin purchased it in the 1930s as part of a New Deal project. Since then, it’s been a relaxing spot that’s simultaneously rooted in amusing history you can feel everywhere.

I started going to this pool this past spring to escape from the Texas heat, and it’s been one of my favorite spots to relax since. The first time I went was on a scorching afternoon with a few friends after class had let out before noon. They invited me to tan at this public pool in Austin, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Still, I grabbed a $5 day pass and decided to check it out. Once I got there, I was surprised I hadn’t heard of it sooner because of its convenient location, five minutes from my apartment. I walked in, showed my pass, and headed down a set of concrete stairs that led to two pools. The left one was a large lap pool where I saw people swimming and taking quick plunges during tanning breaks. The pool on the right was empty, being cleaned and prepared for the upcoming busy summer. The large fields of grass surrounding the pools were filled with people lying on towels, people reading in the shade underneath trees, and families laughing and playing. I remember thinking how much I loved the vibe of this place, and how much I admired the carelessness of the people there. Everything about the place was perfect for a nice, peaceful break to tan, read, or nap. After finding a nice spot to lie out, I went into the pool to cool off. The first thing I noticed was how cold the water was. Since it’s fed by natural springs, it constantly stays around 65 to 75 degrees. It was a shock initially, but I quickly got used to it, and it immediately cooled me down. On a 100-degree Austin afternoon, there’s nothing better.

What makes Deep Eddy stand out to me is its simplicity and subtlety. Other Austin swimming spots like Barton Springs are great, but sometimes those trendier places can feel too crowded and noisy. Another detail I love is how much history lingers in the space. Unlike newer pools, Deep Eddy has character in every corner. When you look around, you’ll see huge painted murals from past artists around Austin, showcasing a unique storytelling panel based on historical images from the Austin History Center. You get the sense that generations before you have sat in the same grassy spots, swum the same laps, and cooled off in the same spring water. It’s like sharing in a tradition, not just taking a swim.

Over the next few weeks, I found myself going back again and again. Sometimes I’d bring friends, and other times I’d go alone just to escape the noise of campus life. It became a ritual: I’d pack a small bag with sunscreen, a book, and a snack, walk down to the pool, and spend hours alternating between lying out in the sun and plunging into the icy water. There’s a comforting sense of community that comes from being surrounded by people who cherish the place just as much as you do. For me, it’s become more than just a pool. It’s a place I associate with friendships, quiet afternoons, and the kind of memories that stick long after the summer ends.

Whether you’re a student needing to escape from the stress of school or just someone looking to relax after a long day, Deep Eddy is a hidden Austin gem that will not disappoint you. The moment you walk down the concrete steps and see the water sparkling under the sun, you know you’ve stepped into something special. There’s no loud music, no chlorine smell, and no need for anything flashy—just the sound of water, laughter, and the occasional breeze through the trees. It’s a community gathering spot, a piece of living history, and a reminder of the simple joys that make this city special. That’s the beauty of Deep Eddy: it shows you that Austin’s best treasures are often tucked away right in your own neighborhood.
