HOPE Outdoor Gallery

Turning right off Dalton Lane in east Austin, an outdoor art gallery spans across 8 acres of land. At the entrance, four white letters sitting on a graffiti-filled brick wall that read HOPE, standing for “Helping People Everywhere.” A few steps in, strokes of paint and thick graffiti lettering detail the outdoor spaces of walls, hallways and staircases, all surrounding a 6,000-square-foot indoor gallery.

The HOPE Outdoor Gallery is an art space that features life-size murals, installations and concrete spaces open for public art. It was created under the HOPE Campaign which , started in 2006, the gallery which focuses on supporting humanitarian and social issues through art. The gallery first opened in downtown Austin in 2010, the original location in downtown Austin and closed in 2019 before reopening. Standing in the gallery, the Austin skyline isn’t too far in the distance, but even closer, cows and horses graze in the field behind. Graffiti cans rattle as all areas of concrete surface are filled with words that read “Be someone,” “Need less, give more” and “Hope,” the word that can be found around every corner. Portraits of people, dogs and even frogs are painted in detail with vibrant patterns and strokes.

Within the many paths in the outdoor gallery there are grassy pavilions and a cafe area, welcoming people to absorb the colors, actions and words around. Avery Stapleton-Plocharczyk, a gallery staff member, said the many areas on the site serve as a place for people to do and create anything they wish.

They are free art spaces open to all ages, the only things you need to bring are the paint or graffiti of choice. For many the art spaces serve as a similar purpose to a zen board, where anything can be created.

The outdoor and indoor gallery also hosts several community events for people to get involved with. They have weekend spray demos where anyone can learn how to draw sketches and techniques with spray paint and receive their own sketchbook, pencils, and 3 graffiti cans to take home. HOPE also hosts live music nights with food and vendor markets.
