Dovetail Pizza in Austin
Dovetail Pizza is new on the scene and full of nostalgia, bringing back fond childhood pizza memories. With a beautiful menu and Neapolitan and NY-style slow-fermentation pizza dough, Dovetail provides a food experience perfect for the family or for a date night.
This restaurant is a collaborative project between Lenoir co-owner Todd Duplechan and Salt & Time co-owner Ben Runkle partnered with Swedish Hill Baker, Alex Manly, and Present Tense Hospitality, Natalie Davis, and Joe Ritchie. Their vision for Dovetail is to capture a casual, family-friendly dine-in experience for making memories and enjoying good food.
Visiting Dovetail is a pleasurable experience. The restaurant has a warm ambiance, friendly staff, and beautiful dining space. The staff is kind, knowledgeable about the menu and history of the restaurant, and very accommodating to dietary restrictions. We took every recommendation from our waiter and were not disappointed!
The Menu
Every item on the menu is unique with flavorings and a result of culinary masterpieces. The pairings of flavors and the detail of each item are impressive to me. Their menu contains a great selection of starters, salads, pasta, pizza, and desserts. Their drinks offer a tasteful selection of beverages, cocktails, wine, and beer.
Starters
It is hard to choose between all of the amazing options, but thankfully our waiter filled us in on all of their customer’s favorite dishes. For starters we had the Corn Fried Calamari made with grilled Artichoke, onion, lemon, and aioli.
Not only was the presentation beautiful, but the flavors work so well together. The touch of lemon tang in this dish is my personal favorite.
We also tried the Honeycrisp salad which consisted of mixed greens, grapes, apples, lardon, pistachio, smoked provolone, and honey mustard. This was our waiter’s favorite salad and I can see why. The portion is very large and great for splitting. The fruit paired with smoked provolone brings together a variety of flavors that are both fresh and savory.
Pizza
For pizza, the star of the show, they offer several specialty pizzas and the option to make it your own. Dovetail also has a delicious homemade gluten-free crust made by Swedish hill bakers that impressively resembles the original dough closely.
We tried their popular White Pie and went for a classic Pepperoni. The White Pie is topped with ricotta cream, snap peas, corn, and arugula, and the Pepperoni with tomato sauce, mozzarella, provolone, pepperoni, and parmesan.
We were very intrigued by the White Pie and had never heard of anything like it so we had to try. Snapeas and corn sound like a strange thing to put on a pizza, but after one bite this became my new favorite. The dough is a perfect balance of crunchy and chewy.
Every table has crispy chili oil and chimichurri sauce in place of the normal red pepper flakes and parmesan. I especially enjoy the crispy chili oil as it pairs excellently with both the White Pie and Pepperoni.
Drinks
Their drink selection ranges from non-acholic beverages like their sparkling lemonade or blueberry green iced tea, to cocktails like their draft negroni. They also offer a wide selection of wine and beer.
We tried a popular pick on their cocktail menu, the Fizz Italiano, and were not disappointed! The Fizz Italiano contains Beefeater Gin, Blood Orange Cordial, and Citrus. This drink is fun, bubbly, and refreshing.
