I’ve eaten dinner AND brunch here, and both were fabulous. For dinner we tried the ceviche and empanadas to start, and the halibut a la diabla and one of the seasonal/special moles with halibut as our mains. I’d recommend it all. You can’t go wrong with traditional Oaxacan mole prepared by a James Beard award winning chef. For brunch we started with the vanilla pan dulce, made in-house, because I wanted to dip it in my cafe de olla. It’s a must. For mains we had the huevos rancheros, huevos benedictos, and the chilaquiles divorciados with over-medium eggs. All were delicious. The atmosphere is great, the decor is modern and minimalist yet relaxing, and their authentic tableware compliments the presentation of the food. The service is impeccable. Your water glass is never empty and the servers are so knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients. Caesar is amazing and will take the best care of you.
I went recently and loved it. My wife says "it tastes like Mexico and my childhood" which is incredibly high praise from her. It is very much worth a try.

If I could give 10 stars I would. We had a 6pm reservation. Liked arriving early, it was very quiet until about 7:15/30 when it really started to fill up. Service was incredible from start to finish. Robert, our server, was the best! He was super knowledgeable, made great suggestions and was very attentive. We had 4 in our party, husband and 2 kids, 19 and 21. We all agreed it was one of our top 3 dinners, ever! Photo of what we ordered in the pics, just duplicate ours, you won’t be disappointed! We LOVED the celery sorbet sundae, sort of had to be talked into it by Robert but he was right!! Really every dish was perfection hard to pick out a favorite, pressed I’d pick cornbread, honeydew salad, and the pasta! Amazing flavors and the right portion size. If we lived here I would want to come back weekly!
All the salads are great, but especially the Thai salad. The wagyu is also pretty ridiculously good. I never would have ordered it but a friend from out of town wanted to splurge. It was awesome. Oh and like others have said- the cornbread is always on point.

I had the Smoked Butcher's Cut and Chicken Karaage. They were both excellent! Don't hesitate to order the Butcher's Cut. It was very tender and full of flavor, and the shishito salsa and pickled onions complimented the teres major steak perfectly. The chicken karaage is some of the best I have had! Service is quick (but not rushed), friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. I have eaten here twice in less than a week and will be eating here frequently. I recommend you do the same.
I really like their crunchy corn fritters. My wife cannot go to Loro without ordering the Malaysian Chicken Bo Ssam. I think it's solid, but not worth ordering every time, LOL. I think the outdoor vibe is awesome (but not in the summer, too hot) and the food is really good/tasty. We used to live a few blocks away and when friends or family would visit we would take them to Loro. OP mentioned cold fried potatoes, OMG, that seems like a huge outlier. I always feel their quality is consistent and I've never had an experience like that. We never order burgers there so I can't comment on those. A burger just seems like a waste when there are more interesting things on the menu.

I've eaten here many times. I've been to many different sushi restaurants. This place and the quality of flavors are amazing. Everything is really great. This is where you go to in Austin for Great sushi. It's so close to downtown, so I wish they had a better view of the city. The food is the star here.
I went to uchi this week, the first time I’ve gone since the pandemic began. It was AMAZING. I haven’t had such a good meal in years. Did the omakase.

Torchy’s Tacos began as a humble food trailer in Austin, Texas, founded by Mike Rypka, who launched the concept with nothing more than a red Vespa and a vision to serve innovative tacos.

Since then, Torchy’s has evolved into a beloved Texas chain known for its bold flavors, creative taco combinations, and legendary queso.

Loved this place. Visited for a quick bite for Sunday brunch, it was filled with people. Nice vibes! Got the crispy potato, egg & cheese taco and Fo Sho (veggie) taco. Both were delicious and reasonable on price. Must visit place if you're in Austin. They have several locations!
Fried avocado, green chile pork, brush fire, possibly the taco of the month, depending on what it is, and definitely chips and queso. Trailer park trashy is very popular, but I think it's better when you're dining in instead of getting it to go.

P. Terry’s Burger Stand, founded by Kathy and Patrick Terry in 2005, has grown into a beloved Austin institution rooted in simplicity, quality, and a nostalgic vision.
The original location at South Lamar and Barton Springs continues to attract loyal fans and newcomers alike, thanks to its consistently fresh food, friendly service, and affordable prices.
Guests rave about the classic double cheeseburger and hand-cut fries, all at a price point that surprises many for the quality received (often under $10).
P. Terry’s has become known for its straightforward menu, hormone- and antibiotic-free beef, and arguably the best fast food veggie burger in Austin.
While comparisons to In-N-Out or Shake Shack are inevitable, many visitors find themselves pleasantly surprised, often preferring P. Terry’s for its better fries and equally fresh taste.
The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with a subtle West Coast vibe and friendly staff that enhance the experience.
Whether you’re dining outside on a sunny day or grabbing a quick bite through the drive-thru, P. Terry’s delivers a reliably satisfying meal that captures the spirit of Austin in every bite.

Tried the Veggie burger on wheat bun for lunch & it was soft & melted in the mouth. Usually veggie burgers are little hard & make your mouth dry but this burger was very delicious. One of the best veggie burger I have ever had and the price is quite reasonable. A must try for all burger lovers!
It was my first job actually, great owners. I met Patrick when I was cashiering, and Kathy when she came in to ask what my favorite birthday cake choice was. Kathy showed up when I was working on my birthday in highschool with a home made cake. I've worked a lot of service jobs, and p. Terry's is one of very few I can't say a single bad thing about my time there.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. Definitely my favorite soup spot. I have been here many times and my last visit was just last month (April 2025). I promised them on my last visit that this would be my 1st review on my page. And I am living up to that promise. I have had both pork and chicken ramen bowls and everything has been phenomenal. They will help you order if you are new to eating ramen. The decor is top notch. The soup is warm & eye-popping & delicious. I am very happy to give this restaurant 2 thumbs way up. Another big bonus - it is right next to one of the best local music venues in Austin, the Saxon Pub. So plan an evening out - dinner and live music. You can thank me later :)
If you go to ramen tatsu-yas website they explain what each ingredient is. Its also on the menu at the restaurant, you have to look at the extra topping section but they lay it out pretty well. I get being nervous to take someone out to a dinner they're not excited for but I think you're making it overly complicated. As far as flavors go, the tonkatsu shoyu is probably the most popular. It's a salty broth with lots of oil. If you like lighter soups, or want something not so heavy, go with the old skool. My favorite toppings are the ajitama (soft boiled egg) and the kikurage (woodear mushroom). If you like spicy food, don't get a spicy ramen get a spicy bomb. Then you can control how much spice is added and it's the same spice they use to make the spicy broths. Good luck!

Got to experience the paella Thursday night special event that happens every Thursday at 6pm. Really entertaining to watch the chefs prepare the paella with all the various steps in the process. Very engaging! And the finished product was simply delicious. The cold beer was a perfect pairing to the paella. Concluded that with an order of churros and hot chocolate to go. What a great evening!
I lived down the road from the original San Ginés in the center of Madrid. It’s the oldest churro cafe in the city. It’s highly respected and once was a late night hub for well-known Spanish authors and artists. And it’s GOOD! Austin just got soo much better

As far as typical Tex-Mex fare is concerned, Matt’s is pretty good. Everything I’ve ever had has been super fresh & oozing with flavor—and very much apparent to have been made from scratch. The drinks always slap. Just tried their cheese enchiladas w/ chili con carne sauce (added some onions which they actually grilled), which reminded me of my abuela’s homecooking. Nothing can ever beat her enchiladas rancheras, arroz y frijoles, or any of her cooking…..but you can do a whole lot worse. I think Matt’s El Rancho is delicious. Is it the best, gourmet, absolutely authentic Mexican joint around? No. But it’s family owned & operated by true Mexican/Tejanos, and that should say a lot (IMHO). To imply that Torchy’s is better is laughable.

I had a horrible experience there the other night. the south lamar location is extremely dirty. the guy handling the garbage, cleaning the floors and mats was the same guy touching the food, bringing out chips, etc. I walked by the kitchen it's super dirty and borderline disgusting. Maudie's hacienda is a different story, that place is great, same company different location.

It's also family friendly with stuff for kiddos to do while the adults booze up.

Whether you want to socialize or just relax on a nice afternoon with some drinks, Gibson Street Bar is one of our best recommendations.
This bar does an amazing job being themed during the holiday seasons.
They are known for their Halloween takeover, known as Nightmare on Gibson Street, and Gibson Wonderland during Christmas.
On Sundays, they host their Sunday Fundays with mimosas specials, carafes, bloody marys, and so much more.
They have a variety of drinks to choose from, which makes it worth the experience.

It's Halloween season and came to the Gibson Street Bar to experience their impressive Twisted Carnival. We entered from the back where felt like walking into an enclosed circus tent. We loved the atmosphere where there was a massive collection of creepy characters on display. It was a massive photo op and spend a lot of time in here before walking up the stairs into the bar. The balcony was the same creepiness but the inside was overwhelming. I really like it and the staff did a wonderful job. They also had a special drink menu to pick your poison. I ordered the Ectoplasam. It was a frozen green pineapple drink for tasted very good. They truly went all out with this immersive experience while enjoying great drinks.
I really miss Kin & Comfort; maybe this’ll hit the spot.

This place is super cool! The drinks were top-notch, the crowd was full of good vibes (and good-looking people), and the music kept the energy up all night. The bass was a bit loud, but honestly, it just added to the party vibe. Overall, had a great time—definitely coming back
Golden Goose on South Lamar sounds like exactly what you're looking for. A couple of other options might include Simona's at the Colton House Hotel (they have really nice couches/cushioned booths and a solid cocktail list) or Little Drinks Lounge (definitely more casual than the other two, but with a very retro aesthetic and good drinks).

The Saxon Pub is a cherished icon of Austin’s live music scene, steeped in history and authentic charm since its opening in 1990.
With over 30,000 performances hosted on its stage, the venue has become a vital piece of the city’s cultural fabric, welcoming a wide range of talent from local acts to legendary performers like Willie Nelson.
Housed in a cozy, rustic space, the Saxon Pub offers an intimate and immersive listening experience, where the focus is wholly on the music.
Its medieval-themed decor complete with suits of armor and coats of arms creates a space that feels both nostalgic and uniquely Austin.
Patrons often stumble upon unforgettable performances, sometimes joined by celebrities jamming on stage, and the sound quality remains top-notch regardless of the act.
The service is consistently praised, with attentive bartenders and cocktail waitresses keeping drinks flowing smoothly.
The pub also offers two-stepping lessons, a rotating calendar of shows (typically with a modest cover fee), and even serves as a venue for private events.
More than a bar or concert venue, the Saxon Pub stands as a living tribute to Austin’s musical legacy, where the sense of community, history, and shared love for live music make every visit meaningful.

The Broken Spoke stands as a legendary cornerstone of Austin’s cultural and musical heritage, offering an authentic honky-tonk experience that draws both locals and tourists seeking a genuine taste of Texas.

Such a fun place! We did the 8-9pm dance lessons with Terry and she was absolutely amazing, such a funny character, guarantee you’ll have a great time. I would recommend going a little earlier than 7:45 to make sure you get a spot in the lesson, and beware that they only take cash!!! After the dance lessons we stayed and got to listen and dance to live music which made this a 10/10 experience!
White horse and the spoke are both good options on Tuesdays. The spoke is an older crowd with Weldon Henson on stage. The white horse is a younger crowd with Devin Jake on stage. Both have lots of great dancers so no need for dance lessons. Just show up and ask folks to dance. People are always willing to teach as long as you are willing to learn.

The Alamo Drafthouse continues to offer an outstanding and memorable moviegoing experience that sets it apart from typical theaters.
From the moment guests walk in, they’re greeted by helpful and friendly staff, creating a welcoming environment.
The theater’s ticketing process is smooth, and servers within the theater provide attentive and timely service, taking drink and food orders efficiently while allowing patrons to settle in comfortably.
The upgraded theaters boast plush, comfortable seating with individual tables, maintaining a clean environment even with food service, something many competing cinemas struggle with.
Menu options include both classic snacks like bottomless popcorn, soft pretzels and more robust entrees like the Royale Burger, which can be customized to guests’ preferences.
The theater also features themed decor, including nods to films like The Shining, adding to the immersive, cinematic vibe.
With themed rooms and fun photo ops in the hallways, it’s more than just a place to watch a movie – it’s an experience.
Combined with quality food, solid drink offerings, and stellar service, the Alamo Drafthouse is a top choice for film lovers in South Austin.

Would be nice if the lounge / bar area offered milkshakes. I’d defenitely come in more just for your food. Always a fantastic experience! Disappointed when we go to other cinemas. This is the best for quality of food and above all else the comfortable, reclining seats. Even the front row is good! Note to management: 1. We are loyal and collect rewards points but where are the benefits? We'd probably come more if there were some. Like free X appetizer with X points would bring us in to a movie we wouldn't have otherwise attended then we'd spend $50+ anyways. 2. The last movie we went to i think we had a new server. He commented about how the fact that i took my shoes off was against health code and to please put them back on. This is about comfort and sitting on a couch for 2 hours. Come on. No one ever has said that before and most people take their shoes off. I don't appreciate stickers like that and it did impact my experience that day. I wouldn't have tipped him except y'all require gratuity anyways. Thanks for being the best cinema!
South Lamar, Mueller, Slaughter in that order. Those are the only 3 I frequent.

I rarely leave Google Reviews, but I really wanted to come and say how much fun me and my friends had last night at Highball. It was my second time going, but first time booking it myself, and the staff was so nice with the booking process, and so nice once we got there. They were singing along with us and really kind, and helpful with the room explanation. The food was also really good, unexpectedly so. Most of us got wings and fries so nothing crazy, but we had full bar access, and a full food menu so that was great, and not having to leave the room to order was great. Only minor thing was that the bathrooms were downstairs, but we figured it out, so truly not too much of a deterrent. I would definitely book if you are looking for a private karaoke room. We had 15/16+ come and fit all of us in their Inferno room. It was $50 an hour, but they offered to split it amongst the guests as well, which comes out to barely $3 a person, plus their own food and drink (we all got individual checks without asking so no bill splitting needed). Great experience for fans of group karaoke!

They also work hard to make sure they are supporting educators and students in the Austin area, which my students and I greatly appreciate! I’ll be back as much as possible!
ZACH Theatre, Vortex Theater, Coldtowne Theater, Esther's Follies, and Salvage Vanguard Theater are a few local groups that come to mind. Also the UT Department of Theatre and Dance has a lot of shows, many free. Here is their schedule. There are also a ton of smaller shows at UT not listed here, I'm not sure how you find out about them. You can find many travelling shows through Texas Performing Arts. Big shows tend to sell out quick. Edit to add the Mary Moody Northern Theatre @ St. Edward's. Also, yes, the Chronicle is a great resource for upcoming events.

I love half price books and come here regularly. This one and the one on Lamar and 2222 are my favorites. The staff are helpful, well first, and nice. There’s so few bookstores around anymore and the ones that stock new books carry such a small selection that it is way more interesting to go to used bookstores. Their books are reasonable to be priced and if you have books to get rid of, they will go through them while you wait. They don’t pay a ton for their books, but it’s an easy way to offload access books that you don’t need anymore. They also carry DVDs, CDs, vinyl, and audiobooks. They used to be open till 10, since the pandemic they’ve only been open till eight. I wish they would lengthen their hours again
Some sections at the south Lamar location are goldmines, like craft and hobby. But for volume, can’t beat N Lamar

I go to Austin Bouldering Project (both the Springdale and the Westgate locations) and I love it! Between the two, I am definitely biased toward the Springdale location because of the better locker room layout and the sauna. They do use color circuits, but if you have the KAYA climbing app, you can see the individual route grades. Pros: They are bright, spacious, and their gym, yoga, and fitness classes are all included in the monthly membership. They stay open until 10 or 11 p.m. depending on the day. The upstairs mezzanine is a nice place to work remotely. I hop off a meeting then hop in the sauna. Towels, shampoo, conditioner, and soap are provided (at the Springdale location). They offer a weight lifting class specifically for women taught by a female instructor. I really enjoy the HIIT classes. Cons: The yoga wasn't really my style. One class felt way too fast-paced, the other way too slow. However, I do have friends that enjoy their yoga classes. I stick to the HIIT classes. Like another commenter said, they are "an increasingly corporate feeling climbing gym." They said they can't make fun, local Austin climbing merch because they can only use the corporate designs used for all the Bouldering Projects, which is unfortunate. In contrast, their local competitor Crux has their members vote on new t-shirt designs, often featuring Austin jokes and local crags.

What a welcoming space! I’ve been doing Pilates for many years and own my own studio in Mexico, so I can safely say that ATX Austin is worth the hype! Challenging classes, great music and super creative lighting. Definitely a fan! Erica was also super welcoming and made my husband and I feel right at home.
Hi! I recommend the transform class at ATX Pilates on s Lamar! There’s also a beginners class at urban lagree but that is lagree and not Pilates (some people use the term Pilates for both though).
