The Desserts of Austin
It’s not a confession that I have a massive sweet tooth. After each meal, you’ll most likely hear my catchphrase “I need something sweet.” This was influenced by childhood, where my family used dessert to prolong meals and spend more time during gatherings. This evolved to my continuous search for dessert places where my family and I will either pair with coffee for a midday activity or Riesling to finish off our evening. Below is a list of dessert places I frequent that I hope you also enjoy in the great city of Austin.
My sister found this charming food truck after a stroll on South Congress. Manoli’s is a family ran and operated where everything is made from scratch. You’ll be frequently greeted by a family member’s smile as they take your order. For indecisive people like me, they will happily explain the varieties of desserts they have to offer. Their menu includes pastries, ice cream, paletas, and Italian ice. I’m personally a fan of their pastries so make sure you try their Fragola and Dark Cacao.
I am a fiend for churros and have been going to Churro Co since 2016. A visit to Austin for my friend’s Bachelorette landed the group and me to try this place. My favorite is the Campfire which is topped with graham cracker and and Mexican chocolate sauce. It’s finished with whipped cream and torched marshmallows. If I’m feeling extra sinful, I add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for just $1!
Tiny Pies and their whimsical miniature size are perfect for those who have no self-control (like myself). But do not be fooled as the miniature sizes are decadent and rich. They recently added savory pies including breakfast and lunch options. Their seasonal options rotate per season but their staple Texas Two-Step is my favorite.
I do admit: I am a macaron snob, both for taste and the pronunciation. My favorite macaron flavor is earl grey and for a while, it seemed non-existent in Texas. Until I moved to Austin, I found Le Politique who offers Bergamot Earl Grey. Le Politique offers many 1st runner-up flavors I like such as Violet Cassis and Neroli Chai. Their pastries also make me weak. The Croissant Aux Amandes (almond croissant) are some of the most delectable I have ever tasted. Their Kouign-Amann is some of the best I’ve also had.
While I am not a vegan nor a celiac, this place is heaven for those who are. The ice cream is Thai-inspired and is made with coconut milk. My favorite flavor has always been the Golden Milk but its grown to include Pandan and Cookie Monster. Their ice cream flavors continuously rotate between 4o flavors. Gati’s bakery options are all gluten-free and mostly vegan. I normally do not lean towards GF dessert but I swoon over their decadent Fudge Pie and their French Silk Pie. I also have enjoyed their Magic Bar, Carmelita Bars, and Whoopie Pie.
