“Mmmm….donuts. *drools*” is a popular saying from Homer Simpson, every time he sees his favorite glazed doughnut dipped in strawberry-flavored white chocolate truffle icing and topped with rainbow sprinkles. This is Simpson’s favorite food and a trademark symbol of his character. Fans of the longest-running animated television series, The Simpsons, can bake Simpson’s favorite light and fluffy doughnut that he can’t simply live without in the comfort of their kitchen and can finally taste what Simpson has been drooling about for all these years.

Ingredients:

Donuts

  • ½ cup of warm water
  • 2 and ¼ teaspoons dried instant yeast
  • 3 and ¼ cups plain flour, plus extra for dusting ¼ cups of caster sugar
  • ¼ cups unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup of buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Pink Glaze

  • 1 and ½ cups of icing or powdered sugar
  • 2-4 tablespoons milk
  • A few drops of pink food gel or food coloring
  • 1/4 cup of colored confetti sprinkles

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, add warm water and sprinkle yeast over the top. Set aside for 5 minutes to bloom. Yeast should go foamy.
  2. Add 3 cups of flour and the sugar in the bowl of your stand mixer. Add butter, egg, vanilla, and buttermilk. Then add the yeast( water and all) and mix with a dough hook for 5 minutes or until the dough becomes smooth. If the dough is too sticky to the touch, add an extra ¼ cup of flour.
  3. Lightly grease a large bowl with vegetable oil and bring the dough together into one ball, then place in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and leave in a warm place to rise. You want the dough to double in size, it should take approximately 60 to 75 minutes.
  4. Lightly flour your kitchen table, remove dough from bowl and gently knead with your hands for 2-3 minutes. Roll dough to ½ inch thick.
  5. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Use a donut cutter or large round cookie cutter to cut out circles of dough, approximately 3.5 inches wide. Cut out a hole in the middle of each donut and discard
  6. Gently place donuts on a baking tray and then cover loosely with plastic wrap
  7. Meanwhile, prepare the oil for frying. Fill a large heavy-bottomed saucepan with oil and use a thermometer to heat the oil to 180 C (360 F). The amount of oil needed varies depending on the size of your saucepan. You will want enough oil to come up about half of the saucepan, with plenty of room for the donuts to sizzle
  8. Once the oil is ready, gently add two or three donuts into the hot oil, one at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Let them cook for 90 seconds, before flipping over and cooking for an additional 90 seconds. I recommend using a timer to make sure to fry the donut on each side perfectly.
  9. Once the donuts are golden brown, lift them out gently using a slotted spoon and pop them on a plate lined with a paper towel. Leave the donuts to cool for about 5 minutes.
  10. Now gathering your ingredients for your pink glaze icing. Mix icing sugar in a small bowl, add 2 tablespoons of milk and stir until smooth. Add a few drops of food coloring until you reach your desired shade of pink.
  11. Dip each donut in the frosting, one at a time, and add confetti sprinkles on top. If the frosting gets too thick, add another tablespoon of milk.
  12. Lastly, enjoy your Homer Simpson’s inspired D’ohunt that will make you say, “mmm… donut,” while watching your favorite The Simpsons episode.
