Nu Disco — A Playlist to Heal Your Quarantine Blues
At an early age, I grew to love a specific type of music. For many of us, the music our parents played became the soundtrack of our childhood that eventually influenced our music taste. For me, it was notably my uncle’s music taste that shaped mine. His music taste was heavily disco influenced and included medleys of diva pop-remixes. These beats have become embedded in my spirit and I find comfort in finding music that resembles the music I grew up listening to.
Nu-Disco is a dance music genre that started in the late 90s. A nod to the 70s and 80s disco era, it’s simply described as a union of disco and house music where disco is modernized. While the world of house music is continuously evolving with many tracks overlapping genres, this playlist’s intent is to create good vibes that will uplift your spirits.
“Back to Me” was released on October 2nd and I shamelessly still have it on repeat. This is the second single that Satin Jackets has collaborated with Panama and I sure hope it’s not the last. I’m a huge fan of Panama. His voice is notable and remains consistent even with the varied artists he has worked with. Although, his collaborations with Satin Jackets are by far my favorite. Next time you’re on a winding road aimlessly driving, take a listen to this song.
“I Like to Party” is the latest addition to my library. This melodic track is how I would imagine partying among the stars at Studio 54 during the late 70s and 80s. This track’s infectious rhythm makes it a great addition to any evening playlist.
Jamiroquai’s 2017 hit “Cloud 9” gets a remix by Purple Disco Machine. Purple Disco Machine awakens the original downtempo track with euphoric, dancefloor beats. I equally enjoy this song in both my running and evening playlist.
Remixed by Jack Tennis, “Think About it” is recreated with the mood that longs for summer vibes. I found this track from a compilation called The Sunset Manifesto by Too Slow to Disco NEO and this song is the star of the album. Imagine retro swimsuits and being poolside under the west coast sun.
Another track that features Panama, “Can’t Stop Your Lovin’” is a song that speaks on hopeless romance. While the lyrics express the innocence of loving someone, the track itself is joyful. It’s a great daytime song to blast in the car with the windows rolled down.
I get a rush imagining this song playing as I enter a nightclub or lounge. This track, “Night Drive in Moscow,” is remixed by Satin Jackets. This song is mostly instrumental with vocals leading towards the end.
Luxxry’s “Another Lifetime” gets remixed by Future Disco. I particularly love the female vocalist and the synergy between her voice and the track’s rhythm. Capture all the feels from this song’s chorus as it’s my favorite part.
A 90s club hit, “Missing” didn’t hit charts until the track was re-released as a remix by Todd Terry. This song is what started my love for this genre of music. Nostalgic, but still recreates the same feel-good emotions when I hear this song playing.
