From Eclipse to an October Encore: Vampire Weekend’s Texas Love Affair

The past year has been a journey for Vampire Weekend fans, beginning with a cosmic celebration during the Great American Eclipse and concluding with an unforgettable closing show in Austin’s night air.

On April 8, fans gathered at Austin’s Moody Amphitheater for a one-of-a-kind concert during the eclipse. As Vampire Weekend debuted tracks from Only God Was Above Us, fans experienced a fusion of music and celestial wonder. Special guests like Thomas Mars of Phoenix joined the celebration, performing “Tonight” live for the first time, while David Macklovitch of Chromeo led a French rendition of “Happy Birthday” to celebrate Ezra Koenig’s 40th. The momentous eclipse show set the stage for a tour that fans wouldn’t soon forget.

By June, the band officially kicked off the tour at Houston’s 713 Music Hall. The Texas connection remained strong, and fans were captivated by the live arrangements that featured hits like “Mansard Roof” and new favorites such as “Ice Cream Piano.” The band’s expanded seven-piece ensemble added layers to each song, making every show a musical journey in itself.

The final show on October 17 at Austin’s Moody Amphitheater was both a celebration and a bittersweet farewell. Opening with “Mansard Roof” and diving into fan favorites like “Holiday” and “Boston (Ladies of Cambridge),” the night was charged with energy. The setlist spanned every corner of the band’s career, from early hits to new classics like “Hope” and “Harmony Hall,” each met with thunderous applause. A highlight of the night was a surprising “Tribute to Mountains” medley, blending Mountain Brews, Mountain Jam, and Mountain Song into one memorable performance.

For the encore, Vampire Weekend leaned into spontaneity with an “Attempted Requests” segment, taking crowd requests on the spot. Fans threw out favorites like “Hotel California,” “Moondance,” and “Amarillo by Morning,” and the band joyfully riffed on these classics, weaving together a playful jam session that felt both intimate and electric. The encore closed with “The Surfer” and finally “Walcott,” giving the night an unforgettable sendoff as the crowd sang along with every word, reluctant to let the moment end.

From eclipse to encore, Vampire Weekend’s tour through Texas was a full-circle experience that showcased their musical evolution and the profound connection between the band and their fans. And for now, we’ll keep listening to all their albums, including the latest, and patiently wait for their next chapter.
