Billie Eilish: HIT ME HARD AND SOFT Album Review

Billie Eilish has been making headlines as she recently released her third studio album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. Eilish started collaborating with her brother, Finneas, at 13 years old and has since won countless awards. Eilish has done it again taking her sound to another level by expanding her genre with new music you can either dance or cry to, while bringing back the familiar darkness of her music we fell in love with since 2019.

In her recent interview with Rolling Stone, Eilish said this new album is like her old self. The creation of this soundtrack was mostly Eilish and Finneas writing each song in pieces, using a hand-held mic while listening to the live audio. Billie said on the Stephen Colbert Show, “My favorite thing about (the album) is that I feel it’s gonna affect you however it affects you, and whatever you take from it is what I want.” She said HIT ME HARD AND SOFT is like art for interpretation.

Fan Favorites

“CHIHIRO” is a fan favorite for its reference to the 2001 Studio Ghibli movie Spirited Away. The title of the song is named after the film’s main character, Chihiro, a 10-year-old who stumbles upon a bathhouse resort for spirits while trying to save her parents and herself. With its ethereal beats, the song is about being lost and realizing that the relationship has changed. It ends with a climactic finish that will make you feel like you are floating.

Another song that fans can’t get enough of is “LUNCH.” This sapphic, pop song is about being with a girl, which is turning heads as fans are calling it a “lesbian anthem.”

Last year, Eilish opened up about her sexuality and was surprised that no one knew. “I am for the girls,” she said in a 2023 Variety interview. She was nervous about releasing the song, but initially, it helped her embrace her sexuality. “That song was actually part of what helped me become who I am. I wrote some of it before even doing anything with a girl and then wrote the rest after.”

However, not all of Eilish’s songs on her soundtrack are upbeat. Some are slowed, dark tempos while others have soft music that can strike your heartstrings.

One song that has fans in their feelings is Eilish’s song, “THE GREATEST.” Eilish is not afraid to show the extent of her unique voice. She has been criticized in the past for having a “whisper” singing voice, but through “THE GREATEST,” Eilish belts out notes that give goosebumps. I think this song is perfect for when you want to feel something, whether after a breakup or reflecting on past relationships.

Conclusion

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT has the perfect amount of songs to take you on an emotional rollercoaster. From melancholy to mysterious, vibing to dancing like no one’s watching, Billie Eilish created an album from the heart that fans can recognize is her. Especially since Eilish ended the album with the words “But when can I hear the next one?” it is certain that it will be just as thrilling, sexy, and passionate as this one.
