Austin’s Free Week Music Festival Unveils Exciting Lineup for 2024

The Red River Cultural District is gearing up to kick off the new year with a bang as they unveil the initial music lineup for their much-anticipated winter music festival, Free Week. Set to take place on January 5-6, this admission-free event promises two nights of non-stop music featuring over 60 local acts across nearly 20 venues, restaurants, and bars in downtown Austin.

Celebrating Austin’s Music Scene

Free Week has become an integral part of Austin’s cultural calendar, showcasing the city’s vibrant and diverse music scene. From indie rock to metal to disco, the festival will offer an eclectic mix of genres, ensuring there’s something for every music enthusiast. This year’s lineup includes must-see performances like The Tiarras at Flamingo Cantina, Duel at Valhalla, Billy Glitter at Cheer Ups, and The Midnight Stroll at 13th Floor.

The Evolution of Free Week

Originally a one-venue event at Emo’s on 6th and Red River Street, Free Week has evolved over the past two decades into a city-wide celebration. Serving as a lifeline for local venues during the historically slower winter months, the festival now takes over downtown Austin, with the Red River Cultural District at the helm.

Free Week not only celebrates Austin’s rich musical tapestry but also serves as a platform for both emerging and established artists. Nicole Klepadlo, interim Executive Director, expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s an honor to provide a platform for musicians while supporting the venues and workers who make up the heartbeat of our district.”

As an admission-free festival, Free Week relies on the support of generous donations from corporate sponsors and individual contributors. These contributions allow the Red River Cultural District to offer paid performance opportunities for artists and sustain the festival’s mission.

How to Get Involved

For those eager to be part of this musical extravaganza, Free Week offers a pass with priority access to venues all weekend. This pass guarantees a seamless experience as attendees hop between performances and explore the diverse entertainment district. Information on obtaining passes can be found on the Red River Cultural District’s website.

As Free Week approaches, Austin residents and visitors alike can look forward to a weekend filled with exceptional music, good food, and vibrant company. The festival not only celebrates Austin’s rich cultural heritage but also provides crucial support for local musicians, venues, and the broader community. Stay tuned for additional announcements, including new performers and a tantalizing food and drink lineup, as Free Week solidifies its position as a highlight of Austin’s music calendar.
