Freddo ATX: Historic Charm Meets Modern Flavors

Since 2021, Freddo ATX has been a local spot with coffee, food, and drinks. The homey building was originally the house of Walter Tips, a Texan politician, built in 1876. In 1975, the house was moved on a trailer from 7th St. to the current South Congress Location. Freddo is now a place for the community, offering indoor and outdoor spaces to study, work, enjoy art, and simply hang out.

Atmosphere

Freddo has plenty of space with two floors of indoor seating. The upstairs has two rooms with tables and chairs, as well as couches and ottomans. The upstairs also has board games available for patrons making for a comfortable third space. The outdoor space is home to beautiful trees, wrapped in lights. The outdoor space is calm and inviting with soft music and plenty of seating options.

Drinks

Now with a full bar and cafe, Freddo can meet many types of drink needs. Their hot Chai Latte pairs great with the cold weather offering creamy tea with the perfect amount of foam. The Espresso Martini is a great combination of what Freddo has to offer, showcasing their fresh house espresso. No matter your cocktail of choice, Freddo has you covered with quick service and refreshing drinks such as a classic margarita.

Food

As Freddo is generally considered a Wine Bar or Coffee Shop, I believe their food deserves way more credit. Fresh ingredients are brought together to make healthy dishes from scratch. The Mediterranean menu has options from light snacks, to full meals that look and taste great. The dips platter is a great place to get a taste for Freddo as it showcases 3 of the in house made dips that start in Freddo with the roasting of garbanzo beans. An order of meatballs packs rich flavors in a hot dish. The chicken melt sandwich was my personal favorite with deep savory flavors of seasoned chicken, roasted vegetables, and the perfect amount of stretchy cheese. The mixed greens salad with grilled chicken could easily become an everyday buy as the greens are fresh with a light and flavorful dressing. The addition of blueberries and warm pecans take this simple salad to the next level.

Events

Not only does Freddo offer great eats and drinks, this Austin spot also has many events and opportunities to connect with the community. Every Monday evening Freddo hosts free open mics. From music, to poetry, to interpretive dance, all art forms are welcome and celebrated. On the first Friday of each month, the best acts from open mic night perform complete sets coupled with an open market, all with no entry charge. Saturday, January 25th, Freddo is hosting their anniversary party, with all day happy hour, live music, raffles, and new menu debuts, this is not an event to miss!
