Best Flipping Pancakes in Austin

Anna Vallejo | December 11, 2021

Who doesn’t love a good pancake? We have had our fair share of pancakes across Texas but some of the best have to be from Austin.

Magnolia Cafe

An Austin staple for breakfast food is Magnolia Cafe. This diner is open 24 hours but the busiest times are during the day and weekend mornings, so if you are anything like us, you may find yourself driving to South Congress in the middle of the night for these huge pancakes.  If you order a pancake on the side with your omelette, you most likely have to take at least half of it to go. The other tasty pancakes from here are blueberry, gingerbread, banana pecan, chocolate chip and banana pecan gingerbread. You can’t go wrong with some classic buttermilk pancakes from here.

Counter Cafe

We recently discovered Counter Cafe back in March with just a quick Google search. We had a craving for some pancakes and we really wanted to try somewhere we had not been yet. The waiter gave a warning that ordering a pancake with a main dish of eggs and bacon would be too much, but who does not want a pancake on the side? What is different about the pancakes at Counter Cafe is that you are able to order the pancake with fruit cooked inside instead of on top. They try their best to accommodate any ideas you might have for your pancake. And yes, the pancake is the size of the plate.

The Omelettry

This restaurant has the best interior decor. Filled with clocks and egg drawings plastered on the walls, The Omelettry has one of the most comforting ambiences in Austin and truly brings out the kid in you. Yes, it’s called The Omelettry, but that doesn’t mean their pancakes aren’t delicious. Though they are limited in pancake variety, they have some of the fluffiest pancakes and can be paired with bananas, blueberries, pecans, raisins or chocolate chips. Don’t underestimate their whole wheat pancakes. They are quite delicious.

Picnik

If you’re a health nut who needs to feed the need for something sweet without having to feel guilty afterward, Picnik is definitely the place to be. We’ve lost track at the amount of times we have been here just for the pancakes. They don’t have many options besides from the original, chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes, but their holy grail is the salted caramel banana pancakes.  The salt and sweet combination is the best on these cassava flour pancakes that satisfies a sweet craving for the rest of the day.

First Watch

First Watch holds a promise to fresh food, always. Everything is made from scratch and never left in heat lamps or made with deep fryers. Their humongous multigrain pancakes come in some original flavors such as plain, blueberry and chocolate chip along with some specialty pancakes like banana granola crunch and carrot cake. But if you are looking to try something different that you can’t find anywhere else, they have vanilla chai latte and lemon ricotta pancakes.
