A Cultural Prelude

Before the concert, all ticket holders are invited to immerse themselves in a vibrant Chinese cultural fair. This unique experience will feature enchanting Chinese dances, captivating calligraphy, and live music, creating a festive atmosphere for all attendees.

The Concert: A Musical Journey

The centerpiece of the evening, “Evocations of Home,” offers a profound exploration of cultural, emotional, and geographical perspectives on the concept of home. Among the highlights is a new work by composer Lei Liang, dedicated to his mentor, the esteemed Chou Wen-chung. This piece celebrates the spiritual home forged through artistic inspiration and mentorship, illuminating the bonds that tie us to our creative origins.
The program will also feature a movement by Chou Wen-chung himself, rooted in the artistic traditions of Chinese calligraphy and poetry. Adding to this rich cultural narrative are earlier works by Lei Liang, influenced by the haunting melodies of Mongolian music, alongside pieces from classical giants like Dvořák, Schubert, Bartók, and Monteverdi. Each selection evokes a deep sense of place, identity, and heritage, inviting listeners to reflect on their own connections to home.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

This concert draws inspiration from Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical system that emphasizes the harmony between our native state (prakriti) and our current state (vikriti). Just as health is found by realigning with our original constitution, the concept of home resonates deeply with self-knowledge and the hero’s journey. Together, these themes highlight the importance of returning to our roots and rediscovering who we are at our core.

As the Brentano String Quartet weaves these diverse musical threads, they invite us to explore our ancestry and how it shapes our emotional landscape. This evening promises not just to entertain but to provoke thought and reflection on the nature of belonging and identity. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate the beauty of music and culture in one extraordinary evening!
