Laredo, founded in 1755, is one of the oldest border towns in Texas. Established by Spanish explorer Don Tomás Sánchez, it was initially a small settlement called Villa de San Agustin de Laredo, named after the Spanish city of Laredo in Cantabria. Throughout its history, Laredo has been under the flags of seven countries: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of the Rio Grande, the Republic of Texas, the United States, and the Confederate States of America.
